iPad track changing on older iPod car connection

I've had no problems with connecting my iPod to my car stereo and being able to change track using the stereo.
However using the iPad it is unrecognized.
Audio works from the iPad but I can't use the stereo controls. (for track changing)

Is there some sort of down converter accessory that can convert an iPad connector signal to an iPod to provide backwards compatibility (for older Apple devices)?

I know scosche have a product for power compatibility but I'm looking for track changing via the car stereo.
