Personally, once the new Mac Pros are released, I'm going to head to the local Apple store to see what the discounts are on the Nehalem based Mac Pros.

I'm pretty much decided on the base quad core model. It will be my workstation for the next few years while I work on my BA (the real fun there starts January) and hopefully I'll be able to start doing paid work here in the next few months. I've been pinching pennies from a $9/hr job all year for this. Now all that is left is to see who will sell me 4x2GB of RAM the cheapest.

OWC and TransIntl will be your best bet for cheap RAM. I think TransIntl may be a little cheaper, but if you do the OWC RAM rebate, it might end up being cheaper.

still dont know that to do with the RAM. 2x8GB might be to expensive right now, but i dont waste the slots with 2x4.

Will the MP still work correctly if one were to mix up RAM modules by different vendors? For example, having 2x8GB via Apple, and then later adding 2x8GB by OWC?

From OWC:
OWC p/n OWC8566D3MPE8GB 8GB modules require that all installed modules be of this same matching part.
Sounds to me like, at least for the 8GB module, it has to be from OWC. And I'm pretty sure its the same thing for the 4GB.

I too am clicking on an order for a BTO 6-core as fast as I can when the online store starts taking orders, and I too will do so even if it's priced with diabolical evil, as I expect it will be. I just hope they don't get so backed up in China with 6-core MP orders that it takes weeks to ship.
I have my vanishing last-of-its-kind developer discount to apply...it expires in December and they ain't selling them any more. It's worth $500 off the current MP. If they make it worth less (or make it worthless) on the new ones, I'll make my displeasure known, but I don't see they have any reason to do that (even though I was somewhat surprised to see that the developer discount was $0 on the iPad, which was not released until after Apple had stopped selling developer memberships to the public).
Then I'll pull the cards and extra drives out of my venerable (but fully operational) early 2006 MP 1,1 and recycle it for however many gift-card pennies Apple's junk dealer will give me for it. It's not worth hassling with ebay.

But seriously, can anyone truly confirm this?
Edit: Sorry, I don't mean to hijack this thread but I need to make sure I don't needlessly waste money on RAM when the Mac Pro arrives. Anyway, I think I found a good enough confirmation by other users at Apple's own discussion forums:
http://discussions.info.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9506388
Seems like you really can't mix vendor specific RAM modules. However, I'm glad to learn that OWC actually offers a rebate for trading in your Apple OEM RAM, which is quite nice. I'll definitely be getting rid of my 3GB Apple ram right away! :)
For those interested and not in the know, heres the link to OWC's trade in rebate offers page:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/trade-in-rebate
Edit 2: Maybe I'm being hasty about the rebates though. Is it correct that Apple will not cover your machine under warranty if it is not using the original Apple RAM? If so, then perhaps its not a good idea to trade in your RAM afterall...

That's a real puzzler. I was very surprised to see the difference in availability times between the new Mac Pro and the new 27" ACD. You shouldn't have to wait the extra month or month and a half depending on exactly when the new ACD ships.

Normally when this type of thing happens Apple will ship the computer and then when the display becomes available it will ship the display.
I'm not sure how they will handle this since the display isn't even available for pre-order.

Well according to Mac Rumors (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/07/29/apple-to-begin-taking-orders-for-new-mac-pro-on-august-9th/), whos called Apple to confirm, it will not be pre-orders, so the new MPs should be available to ship that day.

Screw ordering it at midnight. I"ll be at the Apple store 9AM sharp to pick up either the heavily discounted 2.66GHz (current model) or the 2.93GHz or decide on the new 2.8GHz base model instead.
If the 2.66GHz (current base model) is $1799 (like the 2.8GHz 8 core was back in early 09'), I rather pick that one up as its still a Nehalem thats slightly down clocked as to the 2.8GHz.

Had a new desk delivered yesterday, various parts are on their way (firewire hub, RAM, external HD & DVD burner). Waiting for August 17th to see if there is an update announced for iLife (not that I will use it much), then will order my BTO quad-core iMac. Figure the delay will let them work out problems with supply and delivery. Kinda like intentionally delaying Christmas, but I'm pretty much OK so far.

Yea I was thinking about this too. I might wait until August 17 for the rumored Apple media event. I'd like new versions of iLife and iWork and I would like to get a discount on iWork when getting a Mac.
Hmmm, but I think Apple may offer a 30 day upgrade grace period if you already ordered a Mac or iLife. Thats what they did with iLife '09 when it was announced last January, so I would assume it would be safe to order the Mac Pro right away when it gets released.
So really, not sure if I should wait another week or just order on launch day. The wait is already killing me.

I agree that people have jumped to a largely unwarranted conclusion.
The only real ray of hope I HAD seen (pls note use of past tense) wasn't on any Apple site, but rather on the Kingston site, where the 1333Mhz memory for the new MP's--which I ordered--was listed as being "Available approx. August 9." earlier this week.
Unfortunately, I just looked at it again and that availability date has now changed to approximately August 11.
Of course we can't draw any real conclusions from that either, but if it means anything, it doesn't mean anything good.

You bought it directly from Kingston? Their prices are... a bit pricey. Even links from their site to retailers are significantly cheaper such as the DDR3 1333 4GB module is $100 cheaper from CDW.
Thanks for heads up about Kingston DDR3 1333 ECC availability. I've heard very good things about Kingston RAM.

Yeah, I just sold mine. I was still happy w/ it but decided I better get some money out of it while its still worth something. I got $1300 for it, which I think is fantastic for a 4 year old computer.
Paid $2200 for my 1,1 and could not hand over the money quick enough. I'm not too excited about the new bumps though. None seem like the "deal" the 1,1 was. Now I'm torn over entry level octo or single proc 6core -- I figure they will be around the same price. I'm not really excited about either, mainly because of price. Part of me says just go entry quadcore, get a fast SSD for boot drive, and max out RAM.

That is a question for the ages. As long as I can remember, Apple's graphics card have always been a generation or two behind the PC world, and even then they don't use the best of that generation. It's always some crippled crap marked up 200% from the PC version.
Apple likes to pay lip service to pros and gamers, but never really pulls though.

Chip differences? Is this like the "SP Xeons are better than i7s" thing? Where one is more "pro" due to some minor feature that doesn't make a shred of real-world difference for most pros? If the performance is the same, who gives a damn about chip differences? Or did you not read that review of an actual pro saying the price premium is worthless under OS X?
The main selling point of those cards is the drivers, which are optimized and certified for various 3D tools. As noted, this is worth jack under OS X.

Amen! I share your excitement. It's been a long 17 months since the last update. I'm personally confident we'll see the update tomorrow. My guess is that the sales reps knew the launch date but was never told to keep quiet from the higher ups because of all the other crazy iPhone 4 issues going on, and then were finally told to keep the date confidential after the unintentional slip-ups.
