Is it possible to connect a blu ray player to my iMac using a minidisplay to hdmi adapter and a mini optical audio to optical toslink cable?

Yes, but you need an expensive converter box like this (http://www.atlona.com/Atlona-HDMI-to-Mini-DisplayPort-Converter-for-iMac-27.html). It only provides 720p. For 1080p you need this (http://www.atlona.com/ATLONA-HDMI-MINI-DISPLAYPORT-TO-MINI-DISPLAYPORT-SCALER-AND-SWITCHER.html)

I don't think there's any playback software if you get a blu-ray drive for you mac, short of booting into Windows.
