This is a really cool mod, and nothing at ALL like UT. So if you want a free commercial-quality game that's a change of pace, go for it.
I think it may be better with humans than with bots. But I haven't played it much yet so maybe bots are reasonably playable also. I found them being too quick to take off without me! (I have 1.0--haven't downloaded 1.5 yet.)

from conversations I have heard from the folks at Epic, the reason they love Air Buccaneers is exactly because it's nothing like UT.
In fact, they've been saying how the MSU ( www.makesomethingunreal.com ) contest is almost intended by them so the modding community can explore the limits of their game engine... and the creation of the "Non-FPS" category seems to go along with that sentiment. They want to look beyond another CS clone, or another WWII game, popular and enduring as these themes may be (for example the community mods Frag.Ops the RedOrchestra mods).
There are a few other fun mods like a few vehicle/racing games (UnWheel, Anomaly Racing), and even a marble-madness inspired game, so it's been fun to look at the contest finalists and winners.

I'll have to check them out then... Marble Madness (and now Marble Blast) used to be my favorite :)

They marble mania mod took 5th place in Phase II.

UT2004 seems in contrast to BF1942 in the following sense: I haven't looked specifically for nonFPS mods, but it seems like mods for battlefield 1942 are mostly FPS (of course the most famous being Desert Combat and the star-wars based Galactic Conquest)...
