New 21.5 iMac heat issues?

Hi Everyone,

I bought a 21.5 i3 iMac a couple days ago. I was wondering if it was normal for the computer to be hot to touch on the back. The top back on the iMac is insanely hot too touch. I also just installed windows 7 and I noticed after I ejected the CD it was super super super hot as well. Is this all normal for iMacs? Thanks for your help!

Doing processor intensive tasks will make the machine hot. What were you doing the first time you noticed it?

Install iStat pro, it's a handy tool which can show you the internal temperature o your mac.

aluminum conducts heat really well, so it's only natural for it to feel hot.

I don't know if it is normal. But i played a game under windows7 (2010 i7 27") on mine for about an hour. It got ridiculously hot. I nearly burnt my finger to touch along the top. The back was warm but the metal along the top of the unit was stupid hot.

Anyone else find this? Surely this can't be good for the longevity of our imac's if it they keep getting to these temps? :confused:

Do you know what the temp is? Install iStat pro to see of it's getting to hot.

soo my GPU is 51C CPU 46C and Optical Drive 47C Heat Sink 60C. All im doing is browsing the internet and working on some documents.

my optical drive speed is 998
hdd speed 1099
cpu fan 1197

also when im like browsing facebook, when i click through pictures the computer makes a clicking sound after every picture page. is that normal as well?

Normal (ish) temperatures. Nothing to worry about there.

i have the same situation as you buddy. (21.5" too)
i thought it was really hot but after i installed istat pro it tells me that its just around 40 degrees... and i am pretty sure everyone would agree that 40 ish degrees = normal for a desktop.

try installing something like this and check the real temp?

Those temperatures are perfect - don't worry about them!

Just imagine; I've got a 2008 MacBook and the idle temperature is 65c. If I'm using HandBrake, it'll easily go up to 96c :o I'm just waiting for this thing to explode on me!

I would imagine that the aluminum casing is acting like a heat sink of sorts and is helping to draw heat away from internal components. If that's the case, than it should get hot.
