I might be a bit off the ball and this thread may have popped up before...but it appears (at least to me) that M$ may be encouraging people to steal music.

If you check out the link below you will see they are talking about creating your own cds of mixed music for your mates using Media player 10.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/windowsmediaplayer/videos/jukebox.mspx

Surely that doesn't count as "Personal use". Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like M$ are all for us saving a bit of money this xmas by churning out our own gifts. Sounds good to me...more money for a new G5!!!

For a long time Apple pushed iTunes with "Listen. Rip. Burn." (or something like that). What's different?

The difference is that just recently Steve Ballmer was criticizing this kind of thing, saying "The most common format of music on an iPod is stolen" while cheering for Microsoft's flavor or DRM.

I can see what you are getting at...but I'm pretty sure Apple intended for people to burn their own music for their own use (in a car etc.) Microsoft pretty much says that you can use their player for making mixed cds to give away to whoever. Anyway, it's not that important...just a bit hypocritical from a company that is so quick to go on the attack about the whole music piracy thing (as mentioned by iMeowbot).
