Newbie here considering to buy a new iBook

Hey guys,
first of all thanks for looking and now i'll cut to the chase...
dont really want to spend another 400 just for the xtra video upgrade / hard drive space

looking for a 12inch one
we all know the new iBook specs are right?
1.2 ghz
256 stock ram (will stick a 512 in it) or should i save for a 1gig instead?
30 hd @ 4200 rpm's
32 radeon 9200
blah blah...these are pretty much the main stuff right?

Things that i will do w/ this iBook is
-Powerpoint presentations at work/school/home
-Word at work/school/home
-web browsing work/school/h
-possibly try to play warcraft 3 @ work, when im bored
-wil it be able to handle flash mx or photoshop 8.0 CS?

You ibook will run all these apps just fine!
I've have a 768MB RAM (256+512) in my pb, and it runs great!
If you buy from apple.com you can upgrade the HD to 60GB for $75.

Don't buy your RAM from apple, they are too expensive..

You should be fine with this baby, however, I strongly recommend getting a bigger HD. I got my 30GB HD iBook in 2003, and I struggle with the disk space.

Garage band files, your iTunes, library, photos, etc. all add up quickly.

where should i pick up my ram? who can install it? cost?

apple wants 200 bucks for a stick of 512 ram
INSTORE, they can get it done by tomorrow

is the ram install DIY (do it yourself) that kinda thing?

even flash mx will run fine if i just add 768? when i went to apple store today, they guy said illsu, and photoshop is fine on his 800 mhz with 768 ram

he wasn't so sure about flash mx

i think thats it..., i was hoping they give me a free mouse, but i dont think thats possible right?
its under 1000 bucks for just stock items, since im a UH students 949 + tax

i really need the ram upgrade and soon if i want the laptop so thats my problem, i have a lot of photoshop and flash mx homework to work on...

Check out crucial.com for RAM. I planning on getting a stick of 512 and it is $130ish with free shipping. I have had crucial ram in my computers for years and have never had a problem with it.

The iBooks are great for DIY, I have upgrade the RAM, the hard drive and the optical drive by myself. Photoshop should run just fine, it does on my G3 700 and I work with 25-30mb files, flash I have played with and it worked fine. I have airport express set up in my home and have four computers connected to it. works fantastic and easy to set up just remember to restart computer after installation...
RAM must be upgrade to at least 512mb it you want to work in PS
my ibooks have 640mb and 768mb in them and are smooth and fast.
might want to spend a couple hundred more and get the 14" makes a difference when working in PS with all those tool palettes.

And yes Crucial.com has the best RAM prices.

RAM = DIY
HD and optical = NON-DIY, it will void your warranty.

The ram is installed in a few minutes, there is also instructions for it in the manual.

BTW, I just thought I would note - see my siggy? I'm running Adobe CS stuff on my mac, like Photoshop and Illustrator. Yes on 288MB RAM and 233MHz Processor (omg I have more RAM than I do Processor speed.

I can add that Warcraft III will run fine on the iBook. It runs fine on mine.

Yeah, I recommend upgrading the HD as well. I've got a 60 GB because I heard that it's difficult to replace the HD, so might as well get it built to order.
I think more RAM is essential. I've got 256 MB and I find that it takes some time for applications to get started. I have to wait until I'm old enough to get a credit card first, though. :)

did i get ripped off? or was this a fair price?

Sounds like a fair price to me, except that I could've put that RAM in for ya for free :D

As for the HD, fear not, you can always buy an external drive to store big items on for the future.

memoryx.net has the best low priced Apple ram you will find on the net.

HDD can also be upgraded, when needed. Remember it will drop in price in another 2 months or so, not a big deal.
Buy the iBook stock and buy a 512 dimm from memoryx.net, and if you cannot wait for a larger HDD then and then only buy from Apple.

The hard drive can always be changed out by your self if you are willing to take the risk. Hard drive prices and tech is always coming down in price. After a few years of use if you are ready for a 200GB hard drive, it will probably only cost you $100. Of course there is always external for now.

people at the bookstore made a mistake, and i found out they only put in the 256 instead of the 512 now i gotta wait till monday for this ARGH!....

also...what kinda cases do most of you guy use for 12 inch iBooks?

or protection advice?

Carrying cases - read the sticky at the top of the Buying Tips, Advice and Discussion section - if you can't find a suitable case in amongst that lot then you're not trying hard enough.

Found something on cases for you, (assuming you like soft neoprene sleeve type ones).
This company do one of these - called a RAIDIUS VISION carrier case - but it has carrying handles, so it gives you the option of putting it inside a rucksack or not. Priced @ £17.99 (inc. VAT). Unfortunately they aren't featured on the web site but there are a number of other useful things.

i only want sleeve for now because i do not want to carry 2 bags to school and work.

sleeve to protect from scratches and damages...my bad should be able to handle that...
