I got the 23:th here as well (Sweden). Shipment seems to take a bit longer, ETA is 1:th of September here, but that could of course change when they got their logistics up and running based on number of orders etc. etc. etc :D

Which puts the ship date at 11 business days (a little longer than the 7-10 days advertised). I ordered an 8-core as-is (no BTO).

I had ordered the 3.2 Quad last night, but then my wife actually convinced my to up purchase to the 6-Core (which surprised me to be honest), so I said, alright sure, why not. Cancelled and got the 6-Core now. :D

Also got the HD 5870.

That 27" LED will just have to wait until next year I guess.

I went to place the educational order this morning and noticed the free iPod offer, but the fine print said the offer was good though Sep. 7th?

"*Buy a qualifying Mac and iPod from Apple or a participating Apple Authorized Campus Store from May 25, 2010, through September 7, 2010, and receive an online rebate up to $199 (or instant rebate where required by state law)."

I wonder if you're going to be charged the $199 for the iPod as we're obviously past the 7th?

Nope, I bet it is just a hold on your card. You won't get "charged" until your Mac Pro ships. Apple states this on their website. But, we can all hope :)

I just got off the phone with customer relations (I'm getting my '08 mac pro replaced with a '10 because it's been repaired 4 times and still broke) they said because this is a "Pro" machine, they get priority for building and shipping, I think 2 weeks is just to cover themselves in case there's a massive flood of orders.

Well throughout my Mac owning life, it has seemed that the "Pro" computers (esp. Desktops) do ship faster.

Saying that mine's coming through a replacement scheme which is, from what they said it's a different distribution chain.

Admin said they'll email me the legal forms tomorrow (I had to give them my CC number as the broken one is still here with me, so they're shipping the new one first) and I'll have a specific date. I do hope it's faster I've lost the cost of a new 8 core MP in missed work already!

What are the specs of your dead machine, and the specs of what Apple are sending you in replacement? Just curious how generous they are.

Yea, I'm curious too. :(

Edit: Well, my Photoshop CS5 Educational version just shipped unexpectedly, which I had tagged on with my MP for special educational pricing. It had an original shipping date of Aug 29, and never even entered the "preparing for shipment" phase.

I know Photoshop and Mac Pros are two completely different products, but it gives me hope that Apple's shipping estimates are lenient. Hoping that Mac Pros start shipping this week!

Apple store just emailed me about the BTO Mac Pro I ordered last night and said:

Ship date: 2010/08/24
Delivery date: 2010/08/28 (standard shipping)

This is for the 6-Core, 8GB RAM, and 5870, and I'm located in Japan.

So it originally said 7-10 days to ship, but now it's two weeks. Not sure why but I'm not fussed. It'll get here when it gets here.

Not that it's a huge difference, but they do say 7-10 business days, which would explain the timing.

I guess with the new ipods coming out this month or next that they need to get rid of the old ones.I wonder if they came out this month would we be able to upgrade them? I'm assuming not.

So I guess the rumors about these MP's not being ready till early September were pretty much spot on.

I ordered my mac pro last night with 8gb iPod. The order totalled 4074, but I only had 2900 in my account. I spoke with 2 reps and they said it's ok because they only withdraw money when item ships, however since iPod ships immediately they would take that 200$ or so out first, then the remaining 3800$ or so when mac pro ships. This morning I got an email saying that my card was rejected, so I went to the bank and put the rest of the money needed on my account in cash. When the teller gave me the go I hit the retry card button on apple website, and then they took all of the mac pro money out! So I wonder if that means it shipped???

No they preauthorize the card for that amount.

Essentially, it will hit your "available balance" right away for the entire order, but the cost of the Mac Pro won't go through completely until they ship it on the 23rd.

I'm still deciding which model to buy. The 3.3 seems like the way to go, but not sure for my use if $700+ is worth it. Do you think the Nehalem 3.2 is the way to go? I have a 256gb ssd waiting to install in my new mac pro. I'm guessing the westmere would hold it's value well. I always sell my last mac pro and upgrade to the latest.

We'll have to wait for the benchmarks to see if the hex lives up to the hype. :p

I like your upgrade approach. I'm guessing you get back ~70% of the original purchase (not including the tax) price doing that approach? I'd be curious to hear how you have done in the past. In a round about way you are just renting the machine for 18-24 months. :D

I'm doing the same except I skipped the 2009 model. Selling my MP at 85% off the new 2010.

Still not sure on the 3.3ghz, I've already ordered my 3.2 and probably won't have time to change my order if I wait for benchmarks. I'm mainly using PS CS5 and LR3, so I don't need the multiple cores, but if the Westmere is 50% faster then it's a good buy.

Ordered a 3.2 quad mac pro, no other upgrades. Wanted just the fast clock speed. The second cpu in my previous 2008 model just spend 99% of it's time idling and burning watts.

On the hex 3.33. vs the quad 3.2 subject.
The 3.33 hex is only marginally faster unless you use software that scales over 4 cores. Then you gain up to 60% performance.
If you use software that can benefit from more then 4 cores (i really almost never do) you should seriously consider the upgrade to the hex core. If not your spending the 800$ on a <10% performance improvement and "future proofing". Which is fine of course but 800$ can also buy a lot of other stuff ;)

Anyway

Ship date: 2010/08/25

This wait is seriously ridiculous. My AppleCare was "delivered" on the 9th, the same day I ordered the MP. Which means they must have already linked it to the serial number of my system with 5870 BTO option. What else could they be waiting for? Are they waiting for more people to order so their first shipment out will have a butt load of systems and not like a half full shipment? What's going on here?!?!

The new ones are no different than the MP's they were already assembling. A different CPU in the socket, a different video card in the PCI, a few little things, but their entire assembly and test process essentially works unchanged for the new models. All the "new" parts are actually old parts in mid life-cycle and plentiful supply. It can't possibly take more than 20 minutes to assemble any BTO unit, regardless of the options, on an assembly line. The question is how long they burn them in for once assembled. It can't be more than 48 hours.

Conclusion: they start shipping them out by this Friday.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the Mac Pros were never meant to be ready this early in the first place. The "coming soon" charade was rather unlike Apple. I don't think I've ever seen them do that to their Pro line desktop, let alone any Mac Intel computer (correct me if I'm wrong). Their strategy for generating hype has always been targeted at their iDevices.

I'm inclined to believe that they shared this announcement with the iMac release simply to take the heat off their backs from frustrated and potential Mac Pro customers, and also that the lack of an exact release date in August gave them that 30 day leeway to produce these machines and have them ready for shipping.

All these rumors about "end of summer" were exactly right, because thats exactly when we're getting these Mac Pros delivered. Having the opportunity to finally shop and configure our dream Mac Pros on their online store (on a Monday, which is also rather strange), and enter our credit cards was a nice way for all of us to forget being angry at Apple, and I think that's what their goal was. Short term relief.

Now that we realize our shipping dates are way pushed back, it seems that vented frustration is returning once again though :D

You might be right, but there's nothing in these machines that couldn't have been put in six months ago. Looks like they're just serial procrastinators and reality finally caught up with them.

Apple put no hype at all on this release and still doesn't. It's not on their home page, not on the Mac page, and a small ad on the store, next to the college free iPod and new iMac. So only people interested in Mac Pros and reading Mac forums know about it.

I think every previous Mac Pro release got a place on the home page. This proves the Mac Pro is not a priority for Apple and this update is probably a small evolutionary update before the next major update. I still bought one because I need it. But otherwise, I'd wait another year for the next one.

Apple put no hype at all on this release and still doesn't. It's not on their home page, not on the Mac page, and a small ad on the store, next to the college free iPod and new iMac. So only people interested in Mac Pros and reading Mac forums know about it.

I disagree. Just because it wasn't on their home page doesn't mean Apple no longer cares about the Mac Pro. If theres a reason it's not on the home page, it's because of iPhone 4. They are a consumer company, trying to sell their products to mostly consumers instead of focusing on the professionals. That is why the Mac Pro is not on the home page. And FYI, the new Mac Mini, iMac, Magic Trackpad, and all that never got on the home page.

Can you cancel the order up until shipping or only until they put the hold on your CC? If you're ordering a stock model, maybe they'll get them in stores before ship date...

I canceled my 3.2 order yesterday. I want to see the review/comparison to the 3.3 hex before I make a final decision. My STRONG suspicion is that the hex will only be ~30% faster but out of deference to the folks claiming a potential 50% difference I decided to wait and see. :). Besides, the dang things aren't shipping for another two weeks anyway.

Were you able to cancel your order online or did you have to go through the phone? Just for kicks, I clicked the cancel link on my order, and I was told I could no longer cancel my order and that I had to call Apple to do so.

it should be noted though, that I ordered the iPod touch and Photoshop and I have already received both. I wonder if that's just the case...

That's pretty standard for any internet commerce I know about...an order that has already been even partially filled can't be cancelled by definition. You're in RMA land.

And people were initially expecting late August anyways before we heard the 9th. First they announce it and don't give an order date. Then they are available for order on the 9th. Now we have to wait another 2 weeks just for it to ship! Then wait a few more for it to be delivered, thats ridiculous.

I just called and asked if I had actually saved any time paying extra, and the sales rep told me free shipping takes up to 5 days, and with my expedited shipping it should only be 2. He said the quoted delivery dates don't take into account if you paid for expedited delivery. Either way, $50 on a $3,600 order isn't a huge loss.:p

I ordered me a 6-core monday morning, and just received an order confirmation e-mail, finally.

For the past days, my order status page gave me an estimated shipping date of August 23rd, with delivery around September 1st. Unfortunately, in the order confirmation e-mail I just got these have slipped to August 26th and September 6th now.

Being a pessimist, I was already half-suspecting not to see my Mac Pro before September. Still, sucks to be right. :(

BTW, an estimated 11 days for shipping? Where are these things being shipped from?

Free ship for most early orders said ship Aug 23, arrive Aug 26. Why pay $50 for the same thing? My touch on this order shipped one day and arrived the next. Even if it takes one day longer is it worth $50?

By the way, have any 2010 MP's showed up in a retail store yet?

It depends on where packages are being shipped from. For in stock items that are warehoused across the US, yes, you might get it next day. I've had items shipped from Memphis before when ordering from Apple, and I live in Nashville, so it was next day. But with the Mac Pros they could be coming from China for all I know. The rep told me that if I removed expedited shipping from my order, it could add up to 3 days on my delivery. I really NEED it by the 29th, so it is worth $50 to me.

If it's the same situation, these systems are probably being assembled in China and shipped here.

Just an FYI: when Apple ships your order direct from China and you paid for expedited shipping if you call them up they will refund your shipping since (obviously) there is no ground service from China.

Discovered this a few years ago when I paid to have the "next gen" iPod shipped express only to discover that even the "free shipping" orders were going out express. I called up Apple and they refunded the shipping fee. I learned my lesson and don't pay for shipping anymore. In my experience it's either coming from China or the regional warehouse in PA which is next day ground service.

Yes, I noticed this, too. I bought the 6-core and I have already received my free iPod touch via the education discount. What is up with that?

I wonder if maybe they screwed up the hold amount. I saw unnecessary, additional holds of $210 (x2) in addition to the cost of the Mac Pro and even considered calling Apple about it. I decided to wait until the actually overcharged me for anything before I called. I wonder if maybe they had a hold on the wrong amount and are now correcting it.

I'm definitely hoping for tomorrow. Classes start thursday for me and if it ships tomorrow, there will be a chance of me getting it before classes. Cause if I get it after classes start, I definitely won't wana be doing any studying :)

3rd party stuff? I've had my Creative X-Fi Titanium PCIe card ordered and sitting in my studio for a couple of months now. This will be my sound card for Windows when gaming. Also, just received my 640MB WD caviar black from Amazon last week. I HAD ordered the Intel x25m 80GB SSD, as I mentioned in another thread but canceled it and decided to just wait for G3, if promises of a Q4 release are true. I'm coming off a 5400RPM drive off my MBP so the 7200RPM should a sufficient temporary fix until I upgrade to SSD. Eventually, I plan to fill every drive bay with an SSD as prices fall and my funds replenish :)

As for RAM, I really want to wait for tests and confirmation from OWC or Anandtech to see if we can add 8GB DIMMs. It would be nice to have 24GB in there...

But from what I've been reading on this forum, and from what I recall Nanofrog mentioning, 8GB DIMM might not be possible. Just waiting to see.

I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, what I meant to say was my money was taken out (or so it seems) on the tuesday after mac pro release, so I do not think that money being taken out is the best indication of when they will ship, therefore the earliest sign of the mac pros shipping in my opinion would be a change in order status that says "preparing to ship" since for the iPod touch I received that notification before the cooresponding funds were withdrawn.

Here's a comparison (http://www.hardware.fr/articles/797-1/comparatif-8-disques-durs-2-to.html) of 2Tb drives. It's in French but the graphs speak for themselves. An English translation should be available shortly.

Essentially, the black is faster, but is more expensive, uses more electricity, is noisier, runs hotter, and is apparently more failure-prone than the slower green model.

Anyone have any recently previous experience on how long it takes for them to move these once they're prepared? There's no reason not to believe that they couldn't sit around for days until its closer to the time they've annnounced (23rd). 6-core 5770 ordered within three minutes of store coming back on line Aug 9, status CHANGED to Prepared for Shipment. Ship date still shows 23/26.

The credit card activity line won't change from "auth" to a charge until sometime in the middle of the night after Apple charges it.

But I expect that to be tonight or tomorrow night at the latest. Meaning there's some shot at getting it here in California by Friday. It may ship in 7 actual biz days after all.

There really is no distinct pattern. Could be hours or days. Once it's at "Prepared for Shipping" and FedEx has been contacted I believe FedEx has a 5 bus. days to deliver. (not including if it gets stuck in customs) w/ type of service Apple uses. There is overnight delivery from China so FedEx could easily let it sit for 3 days and not have a problem meeting the deadline.

Hah, well just going by recent experience from shopping at the Apple Store. In the last couple of months, I've purchased iPhones, iPads, and hundreds of dollars of accessories for me and my wife (including a refurb Apple Cinema Display, which I returned later.)

"Prepared for shipment" usually means it will leave their facilities within the next 24 hours. This has remained constant in every order I've placed via the Apple Online Store. I'm pretty sure all of us here can vouch for that with their iPods. And so, if we are to assume the original dates of "Ships by Aug 23, delivers by Aug 26", then we are to believe it will be delivered within 3 business days. However for the sake of practicality of free Ground shipping, let's maintain a 3-5 business day guess just to be safe.

Again, just going off my experience for the last few months of shopping at Apple, my guess is we'll see our statuses change to "Shipped" by tonight, perhaps in the wee hours of late night. If not, it should ship by tomorrow, hence within 24 hours.

If our Mac Pros ship by tomorrow, 3-5 business falls squarely by Saturday. And the only thing I don't remember is if FedEx delivers on Saturdays :p

In which case they don't deliver Saturdays, then yes, we'll have some deliveries by Monday unfortunately.

Ooh, same spec as mine (which isn't shipping yet).

I plan on using mine to browse the web and maybe write the odd email (why do I have to justify buying one now? Apple didn't seem to care when I ordered it...)

Besides surfing the web and doing a few emails, I was thinking 12 gigs of expensive Apple RAM would let me play solitaire smoothly.

I will order 24 gigs (6 X 4) from third party soon maybe.

I was wondering if someone would say something like you did. lol

I might even order 8 gig sticks too if they work.

Just kind of waiting. I figured 12 gigs will work fine for a while until I decide how much I will throw in ultimately.

I am starting out with 16GB from OWC. I'm thinking about going up to 24GB too, but not sure yet. If I do, I will only have to buy 2 more 4GB sticks. I probably will make the upgrade when I start doing more AE stuff.

It is early Tuesday morning in China right now, hopefully the BTO systems will ship soon :)

And I agree, Ben Linus should be the new Apple CEO ;)

just a quick question: going to buy ram asap but we dont have something like OWC over here so i was looking on the kingston page which ram the recommend for de MP 2010. found this:

KTA-MP1333/4G 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 ECC Module with thermal sensor

BUT it costs more than 60€ more than this one:

4096MB Kingston Value DDR3-1333 CL9 RECC registered
KVR1333D3D4R9S/4G
http://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/info/p624340_4096MB-Kingston-Value-DDR3-1333-CL9-RECC.html

only difference in my eyes is the fact that the cheaper ram is from kingston's Value line. any advice?

I will use the new Mac Pro for Final Cut Studio.

Hopefully the new Final Cut Studio will be coming out soon.

My guess is it will be out in the next 60 days.

I built a custom high end PC for Adobe Creative Suite CS5.

The PC has an Intel 980x extreme processor. MSI Big Bang-XPower MB. 24 gigs of Dominator RAM. A SSD and a few other HDs. Then I put a nice hot GTX 480 in the Coolermaster HAF X case. I unlocked the GTX 480 so it would run in Premeire pro using hardware mercury playback.

Premiere Pro CS5 plays and edits AVCHD footage like a hot knife going through butter!

After Effects CS5 RAM preview is great too.

I'd like to know that too, as I'm in the same ship. By the way, we CAN order from OWC, but it might be a bit of a hassle with warranty and chances are we're paying fairly high customs for the modules.

Yes, it's cheaper b/c it's from Kingston's budget line for cheap PCs. You are taking a gamble b/c it's not tested to work w/ the MP and my own past experience w/ ValueRAM is 50/50 w/ Macs -- Mac's being a lot pickier than PCs. ValueRAM is less expensive for a reason. You are spending 1000s on your MP, why are you cheaping out on RAM?

OK, enough "preparing" now it's time to start shipping already!

Anyway, you ram guys should check out transintl for better ram prices. The 1333 ones I got had Micron chips on them. Same ones crucial uses. Quality stuff at very good prices.

That price can't possibly be right.

Kingston charges $113 for these same modules.

Those prices are cheaper than value 2GB sticks, yet these are ECC with thermal sensors?

Considering I got activity at 4:31 AM, 7:40 PM and 10:27 PM, it's safe to assume they're running multiple shifts.

The way I understood it, when the status reads "preparing to be shipped" it means apple (or it's factory workers) are getting it packed up, when it reads "prepared for shipping" that means that it's all set and waiting to be picked up by fedex, and when it reads "shipped" fedex has picked it up. I would imagine that fedex doesn't have a plane leaving every hour, so my guess is that they took first batch (non bto) and left the rest for next flight, so I was wondering if anyone is familiar with large scale international shipping through fedex enough to know how often they send flights and between what hours do they operate.

Interesting, my original ship date was Aug 23, delivery date Sep 3 - just received an email from Apple saying my order was shipped Aug 17 and will be here Aug 23! Stock quad.

Pretty awesome, except it shipped one day too soon so I'll end up having to clear my Visa off a whole month earlier than I intended to avoid interest, doh!

Only fortunately it's not December.

It says "delivers by August 23", but I suspect they'll do better than that. If it's in Alaska Tuesday night it should be in California on Friday.
