Imovie HD images not syncing properly

Only recently have I had this problem:

When I import images into video, the image does not "appear" in the movie until after the player has effectively gone past it. This means it doesn't sync up with the audio or the timeline.

Has anyone else had this problem or know how it can be fixed?
