Does hard drive shut off when I close the lid on my MBP?

Sorry if this is an ignorant question but this is my first mac. When I close the lid on my MBP does the hard drive shut off? I just want to make sure I don't damage it when I'm carrying it around...

Yep, you know it is off when the light on the front starts flashing, rather than on constantly

thanks for the quick replies guys. it just scared me cause when i open the comp back up it looks like it never shut off!! crazy.

Haha, yeah, that's one of the really cool things about Macs, they wake up from sleep very quickly
