Which iPod Classic 4th Gen or the newest one?

Hello.

I am currently in the market to buy myself a new ipod, I have an 8gb nano 3rd gen which I'm more than happy with and a 16gb 1st gen iPod Touch but I want a classic now. :o

I was looking on ebay, and found a old used battered but still works iPod 4th gen 20GB monochrome for roughly £20 or shall I buy one in better condition for £60? But then I was thinking shall I wait for the new iPod classic 7th? gen to be released or get the refurbished 6th gen?

All this starts to confused me now, please help . My music libarary is 10GB the ones I want on my ipod but I have 40GB of music altogether, rapidly expanding.

I bought a new 2009 model Classic at the beginning of the summer, and I love it. Get a new one with a nice shiny warranty.

Personally, I would advise against the 4th gen ones. Really flaky and fragile drives. I couldn't wait to get rid of mine for a 5th gen one, never any problems with it and still going strong after four years.

I don't know, but if it was me, I'd be reluctant to buy an iPod that old, especially from eBay, as there's no way of telling how much juice is still left in the battery or how much longer the hard drive will last for. According to many, hard drives have about an average five or so year life span.

However, if you feel confident about ordering replacement parts and opening the iPod up, you could probably revive one to give you a few years of tunes...

Adding to what Blue Velvet said, I would definitely go with the 5G iPod. (or even better, the 5.5G model updated in late-2006 if you want better video playback time)

5.5G is best - just pimped my 80GB Video iPod with a juicy new battery and 240GB Hard Disk (: now i'm rockin' to 50 Days of music on the go! But grab a white one, these are more scratch-resistant.

Where did you get a 240GB HDD from??? And would it be compatible with my 30GB 5.5 gen?

toshiba released this hard disk about a year ago, model no MK2431GAH. I got mine from ebay, price somewhere around the 200$ mark. it only fits the 60GB/80GB iPod 5G/5.5G, but probably you could just get a new 60/80GB back cover off ebay and fit it in yours - but i can not guarantee this.

edit: just found that RapidRepair sells a kit of hard disk and thick backing for 235$ (http://www.rapidrepair.com/shop/3119-hard-drive-disk-mk2431gah.html), so this should work out for your iPod as well.

I've decided that I'm gonna wait until next release and see if it comes with FM and speaker, if so I'll buy that otherwise I'll get this current one refurb. :)

Yes my advice is to wait and see what happens when the event comes and goes. If they put in the FM tuner and the speaker, go ahead. But if they barely do anything to it like they have done the last 3 refreshes, buy a refurb 7th gen classic, they will probably be about $189 refurbed, but I don't know how to convert those to pounds.

In addition to waiting i'm gonna get the 4th gen classic now too. It's only £20 which isn't too bad considering some on ebay going for roughly around £30 - 40+ currently.
