Is there anywhere to download the separate driver for the mac version of the ati 5870 yet other than software update or the new DVD?

A driver for Windows or OS X? OS X driver updates come with OS X updates so those cannot be downloaded separately. For Windows, you can find the latest driver from ATI's site

OSX. I was hoping to be able to pre load the driver prior to installing it in the new Mac Pro. The Mac version of the GTX285 OSX driver was available separately as a download, so I was hoping this one would be.

You have to upgrade to 10.6.4 to use it, and 10.6.4 includes the driver anyway.

10.6.4 includes the 5870 driver? 10.6.4 has been out for a while. The 5870 is just now coming out for the Mac. I don't think it is in it unless you have the special build shipping with new macs.

10.6.4 includes the 5870 drivers. People already have 5870's working on 10.6.4 with the included drivers (see other threads here.)

That's how we knew the 5870 was coming.

Edit: There is a graphics update coming separately with newer drivers, but it's not publicly available yet.

so much bad knowledge in here...

5870 drivers did NOT come with 10.6.4. The drivers we have and using for our 5870 right now came from a Mac Mini snow leopard image. They are likely beta and no point in pre-installing them on your mac pro as the ones that come on the 5870 dvd (or via software update or whatever) will very likely be much newer and better.
