I Book External Dvd Burner Possible?

Will just about any external dvd drive work with a ibook. I ask this question because I have a sony 510ul that I purchased reasonable to use with it but when I hook it up to the ibook it will not reconize it but it will work on my powerbook. Any ideas? I have it hook up via firewire too. Says in system profiler that it isnt supported.

Patchburn worked like a charm even let me use it under iphoto and others. Thanks alot for your help. :)
