Masking a scratched screen?

I've got a screen scratch that is driving me nuts. I've tried some of the buff compounds, etc. to no avail. Anyway, I'm wondering if any of you guys have had similar problems and applied a screen protector to mask the scratch? If so, does it help much? Right now it shows up because it distorts the light.

I always take good care of my screens.
They are uber expensive.

Well man, contact apple care and pay them to replace the screen, glass whatever got scratched.

If you have the glossy model, you can replace the glass for about $50. Of course you need to do your own repair. To get it fixed by Apple costs about $350.
