View Full Version : https problems in Safari

I've had a number of problems connecting to https (SSL) sites in Safari, including, ironically, the Apple store. It doesn't seem to pop up an error message, it just spins and spins and eventually times out, although it works sometimes. While it's spinning, neither other Safari nor MSIE windows can seem to access anything, but as soon as I click "stop" the other windows can get through. Also, Mac IE seems to work fine on the same sites. I'm using 10.3.6, but it was happening before the 10.3.6 update (I've reinstalled Safari, deleted Safari's plists and local folders and all that, and even deleted my WebKit (or whatever it's called) library folders and reinstalled Safari to get around a problem where Safari was generating a lot of "localized string not found" messages). This is on a 500 MHz TiBook with 768 MB RAM, all updates installed, connecting over an airport card to a linksys 802.11b router to cable modem, if that matters.

I did a re-format and reinstall of OS-X not too long ago, and don't have many apps running. I've googled with no luck, and any clues or pointers would be most appreciated... obviously using IE is an acceptable workaround, but I've tried pretty hard to keep this machine clean, and it feels like an admission of failure to use MSIE on a PowerBook...

See if there is anything helpful in this thread from Apple/Support/Discussions. Other people have had the problem and there are so many different answers. Good luck with this curious Safari behavior.

Why not try Firefox, most people seem to prefer it over both IE and Safari.

The alternative browsers are doing well and that's a good suggestion. Personally I never use Safari, preferring OmniWeb. It costs to license but imo is well worth it.
