Emoji Free, sending pics 'emoticons' within SMS

I've since started using the emoticons within SMS messages to other iPhone users which is a novelty. I take it (as O2 in the UK now charge for MMS outside your unlimited SMS) these will still be treated as an SMS message NOT MMS?
