FCP Capture Settings vs Source Material

Hi,

just wondering if anyone knows the ins and outs of what can happen if your capture settings are superior to your source media.

As an example, if my capture settings were for 1080p and my source was on a DVCAM tape-

Would I get 1080p file size with the original DV quality?

Would there be any benefits to doing this? (perhaps it might be easier to work with on a 1080p timeline with other true 1080p footage, etc)

If upconverted with a kona card, maybe it needs to originate as a DV file?

Anything else I might be missing?

If you try it via FW nothing will happen because when you capture via FW your capture settings have to match your footage settings. If you use something like a Kona card that can uprez then you'll have 720x480 DV footage blown up to 1920x1080. It won't look great but it will look better than scaling it up in FCP. Compressor does a good job as well, but the Kona 3, from what I've read, does the best job short of using specialized equipment.
