hi everyone!!!
I'm in the market for a dual G4 upgrade. Currently, I have a Dual 500Mhz G4, with 2GB RAM, Radeon 9000, Superdrive, and several hard drives (290GB total) . I am considering purchasing either a Sonnet Duet G4 at 1.3GHz or a GigaDesigns dual 1.4ghz G4 upgrade.
I mostly work in audio, running DP4.5 and Reason 2.5 with many plug-ins. Of course, a new dual G5 would obviously be the way to go but I don't have enough cash to put down on one. Even if I sold my current G4 and took the price of an upgrade and put that towards a G5, it wouldn't get me a dual 1.8, not to mention the expanded memory and hard drives.
So, this is my question: Would you recommend a Sonnet Dual G4 or a GigaDesigns dual G4? I feel that with Sonnet, I am paying for guaranteed reliability (ive always had great experiences with them in the past) and non-overclocked processors. With Giga, I am getting maximum performance and the ability to tweak settings and overclock if I so wanted.
My basic concerns with Giga are how likely am I to fry my processors if they are overclocked too long? Meaning, even though they guarantee their 1250MHz chips for 1400 operation, how realistic is it that they will last? How reliable is their stuff? Also, how noisy are each of the upgrades? Since the Giga is a 7457, it runs a little cooler and hopefully would be less noisy. I havent heard any complaints about noise with the sonnet upgrades.
We'll put it this way:
Giga Sonnet
Speed (as sold) 1.4ghz 1.3ghz
Speed (actual) 1.25ghz 1.3ghz
chip type 7457 7455(?)
L2 cache 512kb ????
L3 cache 2mb ea 2mb ea
price $699 $609
is the extra $90 worth it, for an extra 100Mhz on each processor? What do YOU recommend?
thanks in advance to anybody who can help.
