I just got one of the new western digital EARS drives.

The WD20EARS (2 TB Caviar Green)

I know it has some new formatting technique in it to allow for higher density on the drive itself. Is there anything that needs to be done with this drive outside of simply formatting it for HFS+?

No, newer versions of OS X are fine with those. The only issue is for people still on old OSs like XP or Panther.
