Hi guys,

I was just wondering what you all sit your mac pro on if its not on your desk.

Mine should be here tomorrow *crosses fingers* and the carpet in my room is too spongy to sit it on (and I don't like it to be on the floor anyway. I thought finding a small stand or something that would let it fit under my desk would be easy but boy was I wrong! (And i'm not skilled enough to make one)

So what is your mac pro sitting on? Does anyone know where I can find something like this? (Sorry for the quality. I'm in a hurry haha)

You can make something like that VERY easily.

1) Go buy a board/shelf for the base piece
2) Buy 4 short legs that would be used for a standalone cabinet or vanity (I know Ikea sells some nice, cheap ones)
3) Attach feet to board/shelf

:D

[My MP sits on my desk, by the way—but it's 7 feet wide]

If I had an extra 100 to blow on making my MP look cool it would be hanging from this:

Well is there any additional stress put on the top two handles? Causing them to break or bend

Not a Mac Pro, but my old MDD G4 sits next to the cat box and it sucks in a lot of cat fur and little dust. I've resorted to taping dryer sheets to the back to trap it all. I've actually noticed a decrease in dust after I've started keeping it on all night and all day.

What do you mean by "spongy"?

The Mac Pro is around 50 pounds or more depending on how you have it configured it's not going to move much once you have it in place. If you are worried about it falling over.

As for dust that can be a problem but it does sit about 2 to 3 inches off the ground with the feet.

A simple and cheap solution would be to go to the local lumber yard and get them to cut you a piece of plywood. 2 foot long and 1 foot wide would be more than enough. Then just lay that on the floor and set the Mac Pro on top of it. Not the prettiest but it would be cheap.

Oh, that gives me an idea... I have a left over Acrylic sheet from an old project... I can put my Mac Pro on top of it (and something under the sheet... haven't thought of what yet).. since currently it's just sitting on the carpet :p

I would love to do that but the underside of my desk is currently occupied by powerboards and cables which I am re-orgranising right now with ;)

But a note on the handles... it would take more than the machines own weight to bend 2.93mm thick (i was bored and measured it with calipers) aluminium.. especially since stuff like (yacht) masts can be made of this stuff

I agree about the strength of the case. I'm actually more worried about my table giving out (it's only ikea) than any direct stress on the mac pro.

I was interested in the Sonnet Maccuff as well, until I found out that my desk would likely not support the weight (particleboard of some sort w/ laminate). Searched around for stands and carts, and was surprised at the lack of options that were both compact and nice-looking (to my eyes, at least). Decided to fashion something myself.

I made a rolling platform from a 13" x 22" utility shelf. From the hardware store, I purchased a small piece of .25" thick oak plywood, casters, washers, and some acorn cap nuts, and put it all together.

Sure, it's a little strange-looking and certainly not the quickest / easiest solution, but now my new baby won't have to reside directly on the floor, and I can easily roll it out from under my desk as needed. Now all I need is for my MP to show up tomorrow and meet its new home...

Hi Ya

I have used one of these ( Got mine from Ebay for about £50 ) and it worked very well indeed, if you do not mind putting half a dozen screws into the underside of your desk.

Also I found that some help lifting onto and off of the hanger would be very wise.

Cool thanks Washac,

Well done for getting it for £50. How strong is your desk? Is it solid wood? I have a composite plywood thing and I am a bit apprehensive as to whether it will take the weight on the screws.

It's sitting upright, diagonal on the table. Very sturdy. If you wanted to you could cut the legs to make it shorter, but this height matches my desk so it's easy to get at the drives. Plus it's only 8 bucks.

This is what I use as well, though I opted to install it by securing the "L" shaped pieces inside the end of the desk frame instead of under the frame as you did, so the computer hangs outside of the desk instead of under it.

However you choose to attach it, I think it works really well if you have an Ikea desk. Not expensive either.

I'm worried about the depth of the dolly, 18 inches. The Mac Pro depth is 18.7, so I'm worried the feet would be right at the very edges, which might not be stable.

Actually, the price is cheaper than that ($42) but I don't think there store has been updated in a while, which worries me even more. I got the price quote when I emailed them regarding shipping.

But my question was about the size, not the price. And, for the record, I don't make crap myself. I live in a flat, not a woodshop.

Not alot of physics majors here I take it.... but a Mac Pro hanging from hooks as wide as the handles is no more pressure/risk than the bottom handles bending/breaking when sitting on a flat surface.

Would you worry that a bridge you could stand on would be to weak to hang from?

I think the issue is that it is effectively hanging from screws that are screwed into the desk. The desk surface has to be able to take this kind of fixing. Some lightweight desks might struggle.

Same here! He's a cute little guy but we never had him as a puppy, and the humane society guesses he was a stray since birth so he is quite the challenge to house train. My Mac Pro is sitting on the bottom shelf of a $20 Target kitchen rack that I converted into a lightweight 19" data equipment rack. (Influenced by this poorly thought-out Engadget how-to (http://www.engadget.com/2006/04/11/how-to-rackmount-your-gear-for-cheap/).)

The wheels of the G5 Skateboard I've got attached to the bottom of the MP sit perfectly between the wire rack bars.

A Frankensteined Gateway turned NAS sits immediately next to the MP. With a gigabit HP switch, my DVI KVM and a VPN router in the rack, my MacMini server and its drives in the sliding shelf and a laser printer up top.

Maybe I'll take a picture this evening.

Re-reading this I think I got the wrong end of the stick. You were talking about stresses on the Mac Pro enclosure maybe. In which case I agree the difference is negligible. The aluminium is in tension rather than compression, but that will make little difference I think. It was designed to be lifted/held by the handles.

unfortunately the skateboard is no longer made, but to my eye is the most attractive wheel solution. Some aluminum wheels right into the base of the case would be nice, but difficult to install. All desktop towers should come with wheels. I don't get why they don't at least have the option.

My place is dusty *and* I have pets, so hair tends to travel like tumbleweeds. That's the only reason I want it off the floor. I found a wood stand finally that's the perfect size and keeps it about two feet off the floor, clear of the tumbleweeds.

Not necessarily:
a) The door could tight fit close the C shape the case forms seen from the front, when the weight is pressing top down on the handles - but not when the weight is pulling on the handles.
b) We don't know how the handles are attached at the door side - it is at least possible that there's screws that are attached at a place that can withstand more pushing force than pulling force. Or vice versa.
c) We don't know if the bottom and top handles are attached in the exact same manner.
d) Every time you touch the desk there's vibrations that are transmitted to the mac when it's hanging. That could increase the effective force on the handles. It could also loosen the screws that possibly attach the handles to the rest of the case.

Sorry for the nitpicking... It's probably save to hang it, nevertheless. :)

d) Every time you touch the desk there's vibrations that are transmitted to the mac when it's hanging. That could increase the effective force on the handles. It could also loosen the screws that possibly attach the handles to the rest of the case.

Sorry for the nitpicking... It's probably save to hang it, nevertheless. :)

Worse case scenario… your computer falls like 4 inches? :p

:) Not even that, probably. The case could get damaged though...

I own one and they work great. Very sturdy. The trick is making sure it's attached to the bottom of the desk well. I used screws and a lot of wood glue.

Many thanks for this reply.

I have now ordered one of these in silver. They were willing to ship to the UK (for free) if I ordered a Cable Manager as well. Total cost - $85 (£55). I will let you know how it works out.

I know this is an old thread, but I promised a report back, so here goes. I bought one of these from:-

http://www.kaecorp.com/store.html

I have now had time to install it and I have attached some photos. It works great. The desk is a really cheap low quality number from Ikea. I was really worried it would not take the weight because it is hollow and the underside is only a bit of hardboard. The screw fixings went in very easily and I was not convinced they engaged properly with the desk surface. Fortunately I used "No Nails" glue and I think it is this that is mainly holding it in place. I kept a few books under the legs (with a small gap) for a few days, just in case it decided to give way. All good so far.

I really love it. I think it was really worth the money and effort.:)

Nice installation but I am not that much fan of the cable going down screwed along the foot of the table...

Mine sits on a 1/2 inch think plank of wood, painted with silver metallic paint. Keeps it up off the carpet and is less dusty.

Thanks guys,

I quite like the cable. I was going to shorten it, but I thought I would leave it like this incase I need to move the set up sometime (further from the socket).

Nice clean up there.

I need to organize my cables soon; the back of my computer are like a dozen or more cables going—one for each possible connector and maybe a USB hub as well. :(

I usually clean up the inside of my build very well, but it appears I never do very well on the outside.

I know. It's one of those things you never get round to isn't it. I purchased a pack of cable ties and had great fun.

Here is my humble setup.

It isn't normally this clean, considering it is a work area ;)

My next project is to get the VESA mounts for the Apple Cinema Display and mount them on the wall.

Mac Pro mounted under the table as well as cables and power supplies for the displays.
