View Full Version : Will Apple ever allow remote task launching via push notifications?

I am working on a project right now and it would be REALLY useful if I could launch a task based on a push notification from the server side(it's not something that requires direct user interaction but instead would start downloading something in the background).

Do you think Apple would ever allow something like this? Do any other devs want something like this?

Complete multitasking would be really useful, but until that day is there any other way to do this without jailbreaking?

Without the user agree to the operation taking place? Absolutely not. With an alert popping up say "Application X would like to download Y. Please touch OK to allow", perhaps at some point in future. But even then I suspect not.

Slightly off-topic, but interesting technology nonetheless :)

SMS specification support UDH (user data header) for implementing concatenation, and sending vCards etc. Java J2ME allows client-server protocols to be implemented over SMS ports (see http://developers.sun.com/mobility/midp/articles/wma/).

I would not expect Apple to invest in this cellular protocol but rather something IP -based.
