Yep, got hit yesterday with a load of spam from some online gambling emporium, and after trying to delete the comments and ban the numerous IP's. I can't do anything with my site.

It still looks ok, but I can't rebuild it or add any new posts. After building up a regualr readership and a large number of posts over the year I've had it, I really don't want to have let it all go to waste because of a bloody spammer.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

How often do you update/backup/archive your site? I usually recommend doing this once a month or more often if you update more often. I'm in Tokyo, do a lot of work for the clubs in Roppongi and for other businesses... Give me a pm and I may be able to help or can put you onto someone who can.

Thanks thequicksilver!

Yeah, MT-Blacklist was the first thing I thought about (after wishing untold misery upon the spammers). But I can't get it to install, so whilst the site is still up and running (minus the commenting feature), I can't edit anything or make new posts.

Very frustrating...

i solved this problem in another type of blog. i didn't use mt because I heard it was vernerable (to hackers more than spammers). anyway, here's how i solved it on another blog system.

so these spammers dont visit your site. they just hit post-comment.php or whatever php file MT uses with their information loaded. thats why people get comments on entry #15 when they only have 10 entrys.

to solve this just change the post-comment.php to something else like, ihatecasinos.php and find out where the form is that handles the comments, should have something at the top <form action="post-comment.php"... and change that to the new name. this way all those automatic spamming scripts can't post.

hope this helps. this is the ultimate way to stop (systematic) spam. if someone hates you then they can still go onto your page, fill out the information manually over and over again, and submit. but this is easily solved by ip ban or roughing the f***er up.

Thanks snkTab

In the end I gave up and decided to move everything over to Wordpress, which as it turns out was a blessing in dusguise.

For anybody interested in starting a blog but isn't very familiar with CSS or PHP like me, then Wordpress is a much easier piece of software to use and install than Movable Type. Plus with the precautions I took before I put any posts up and transferred my old ones, I haven't had a single bit of spam....yet!

And there are a plethora of ready to use templates, which whilst relatively generic, are still fairly stylish. With a minimum amount of effort, time, and fuss, I managed to transfer all my old posts and have my blog looking like this.

I just wish I'd opted for Wordpress right at the very start....

hehe, actually wordpress is the one i use now. i like the fast install. also, you're still susceptibleto the same type of attack. so you just need to rename wp-comments-post.php and then in wp-comments.php find the reference and change that too. my girlfriend was hit by spam yet I wasn't. lol, so I never fixed it for my own blog.

it's amazing how these places find you. I mean i have a 2.5 year old domain name but its pretty much private and unlinked to... since there's nothing on it (my own ghetto iDisk for ages). i set up my gfs blog, in a newly created directory from my domain, she makes a post (no links, no outside images, just text), tells noone about the blog and in a few days SPAM. WTF!
