View Full Version : Difference between two Hitachi 7k250 models?

Here's a tricky one that Google has utterly failed me on:

If you go to most online retailers that carry a variety of hard drives, you will find two different versions of Hitachi's 250GB 7k250 SATA drive. Both are Model HDS722525VLSA80, but one has a "Part #" of 13G0255 and the other 14R9464.

The former is generally a tad cheaper, but after carefully comparing every published spec on both of them at several retailers and even on Hitachi's own site, there is ZERO apparent difference--every published number is identical.

Does anybody have the foggiest idea why there are two different part numbers out there, and several stores actually stock both? The only thing I can even think of is that the lower number is a previous year's productio run, and so would have a functionally shorter warranty.

(In related news, deciding between a Maxtor 300GB 16MB cache and a Hitachi 7k250 is difficult, since the Maxtor is more expensive and I don't trust their reliability, but they're sure fast.)
