I'm an old guy and by current reasoning I'm ancient. here's what I want to do but can't seem to kind the key.

I have an iPod touch 4 which I use exclusively use for audio books, which i listen to while I'm on the treadmill. So why isn't it simple to get books at audible.com and put them on my iPod?

First i have to use my audible password, then my amazon password, then when i get to iTunes i have to use my apple ID. After all that, I haven't found discovered how to move books from my audible library and my iPod, which is connected via iTunes. I've tried dragging from audible and it doesn't work. I've tried dragging from my download folder and that doesn't work.

Audible has instructions for transferring material on a PC, but not on a Mac. So how do i do it?

Why can't I get my iPod to register as a device (or drive) on my desktop so i could transfer directly to it from my download folder and leave iTunes out altogether.

I've seen mention of an app, presumably from the Apple store, that simplifies this process. But I can't find it.

God, i hate iTunes.

I'm going to be buying a new MacBook before college (after WWDC) and I've been looking at the apple refurbished store. I understand that everything is tested and fixed and that I don't get a fancy box, but are there any other risks I should worry about? I saw that I can get a refurb rMBP 13 for 1269, which is barely more money than the other MacBooks. It seems too good to be true. Are there any risks or things I should worry about when buying refurbished models? Otherwise I'd buy a new Air for nearly the same price (student discount + upgraded RAM).

I have a early 2011 13mbp (ML) with dual HDD (m4 in original bay and another HDD in optical bay).

I was playing Sixtyforce(n64 emu) and it crashed so I had to force restart it. Wen it restarts, just white screen. I tried press option when I force restart but nothing happens. Tried several more times and there's a question mark on a folder. Did some google-ing and it says my Mac can't find the proper software to boot. Pulled out the ssd and place it in an enclosure to try it on another Mac. Opened disk utilises but it doesn't see the ssd.

Place the ssd back to my Mac then tried command r (Internet recovery) then tried disk manager, it sees the ssd but the verity and repaid button is grey out. Tried TM restore but it sees nothing even though it backup. Check my wife's TM and it sees the Lion backup.

Tried install new os but it says something like it couldn't be installed. Please restart the application.

I'm out of option!

Fan problems on Macbook pro 13" retina

Hi

I bought my macbook pro 13" retina right before Christmas. Just a few days after I got it I started having issues with the fan.

The machine can run smoothly for hours and then the fan suddenly starts like a jet-engine. This usually happens when the temp according to smcFanControl and Temperature Gauge is between 45-50C (113-120F) so i dont think the reason is overheating. I also dont think the reason is high CPU because I usually dont run any high performance programs.

Usually the fan runs at about 2000RPM then it jumps to 7-8000 for a few seconds and then down to 0 and up again. This can continue for many minutes and its quite loud. While this is happening i usually hear some "clicking" sounds from the left side of the machine. Almost like same sound as connection to modem internet years ago, but not as loud.

I took the machine to my local Mac dealer and they took it in for a service. They didnt find anything and said my fan worked normally under stress. I had to pay about $80 for it...

Anyone know what this can be and how to fix it? I have tried to reset SMC without any luck.

Thanks

Keyboard stops working after ejecting USB device on MBPr

Not sure when this started happening, but every time I eject certain (not all) USB devices (Android phone, USB HDD for time machine) the keyboard stop working. I've got suspicions for software suspects - the recent update happened just before I had the problem, and just before that I installed Parallels. I'm guessing its either one of those things or a hardware problem. The only button that works is the power button.

Is there any way to diagnose this? On Windows I'd probably look in event viewer to get my first clue. Is there anything I can do to start diagnosing this (or is it a common problem - I've searched for it on google, but the search results are largely irrelevant).

Any help appreciated.

Grey Screen - Help, Complete Novice!

Hi there,

So the mac pro has been acting up since yesterday eve. Today when I logged on, it got stuck on the grey screen and eventually went blank and died.

So I reset the PRAM and NRAM as suggested from a site and it started back up fine.

A while later whilst on youtube, the rainbow wheel started spinning and would not stop so @ 30 mins in I pressed power button down to force quit.

When I tried to reboot it reverted back to grey screen again....

Another suggestion was to go into Disk Utility Repair so managed to do that but realisd I didnt have the OS disk to put in but tried to verify the HD under 'First Aid', it stated that it needs to be repaired so I click repiar on the HD icon...I then closed out of Utilitys and it gave me the option to restart and I did...

This time a bar underneath the apple on grey screen started loading and when complete it went back ot the usual grey screen.

Powered off again...

I have then tried safe mode reboot but the bar started loading and now its just stuck in grey screen..

Is it stuck on the loading bar because of the utility stuff I did and if so is it not updating as it starts again if a reboot is attempted?

Any advice please and thanks...even to get onto home screen again to back up etc...

Any advice at all would be great..

apologies for long winded tech shy vocab

Thanks!

Problems with Sync

I have had a bit of an issue with Syncing my contacts over the past few months.

I have a MacBook Pro, iMac, iPhone 4 and iPad 2. What I would like to achieve is one set of contacts across all devices with no duplicates. I would like the master data set to reside in GMail as it is the one common thread across all devices and (I believe) is the most practical location to store the information.

My primary contact location is my GMail account, I also have contacts in cobook, and in each of the contacts applications on the MacBook and the iMac.

My problem is that there seems to be no master set of contact data. The devices all sync together with the sync utility, icloud and Gmail. As a result I have multiple duplicate contacts and I keep losing key bits of information i.e. email addresses and phone numbers of people.

I fear I may have overcomplicated the issue with my setup ... as I've certainly got a right 'dogs dinner' on my hands.

Any help would be greatly received.

The end of PPC

So a little while ago I started a thread, and people chimed in with some good reasons / features these machines have which keep them relevant in this modern day and age. There will come a day though (for many people, this day has already come), when they are simply too old to be useful at all.

I have a desktop for all my heavy stuff (media, gaming etc.), but still use my 1.67 PB regularly for server management (SSH), audio production (Logic), casual gaming (Quake 3 etc.), minor photo editing (Aperture), development (Python), web surfing etc. etc.

For all of those tasks bar web surfing, it will never be obsolete. Pro audio is probably going to be using 24-bit 48kHz RAW for the foreseeable future - which the PB handles just fine. Every day there are bigger and better synthesizers etc., but the sheer number of producers still using G5s seems to suggest that it's perfectly feasible to make decent music with the tools we have already.

There are always going to be players for the old retro games (though I feel Quake 3 has been somewhat superseded by Quake Live) - thus, gaming will never make it obsolete.

It's debatable whether using a PPC for development work will be feasible in a few years' time; it really depends on what you are developing. Most of what I develop is either for embedded hardware targets, web applications, or command-line utilities. Regardless, the only intensive part of development is compilation, which can be done on a remote machine anyway.

While I don't do any editing, I use Aperture to manage my library and fix the colour levels on scanned negatives (I shoot a lot of film - such a hipster, I know). When working with images from my DSLR, my PB does struggle. I feel this is definitely an area where they really show their age due to the lack of RAM and CPU oomph when dealing with high-resolution RAW images.

So what does that leave? Well, web surfing, and the hardware itself. Thanks to the TFF and the like, we have a modern web browser which is able to handle HTML5. I'm no web designer, but I feel that many websites these days have a severe case of information overload. The other day my girlfriend was complaining that my PB was slow while browsing the Daily Mail (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/index.html) (avoid!). Given the design, it's not at all surprising. On further inspection, there are 4.4 MB of resources on the homepage alone (see this (http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/#!/cVU18D/http://www.dailymail.co.uk) for the breakdown). That is absolutely ridiculous. The thing that really grinds my gears is when you go to read an article, the sidebar lists every single article - meaning the thing you're reading takes up maybe a screen height or two, and then there's a massive white gap all the way to the bottom, with reels upon reels of articles on the right that I would have noticed anyway while methodically going through everything on the front page. CSS3 is also another sticking point. It's now possible to achieve a lot of things with pure CSS that would have previously only been possible using sliced up images. The toll some of these functions take on the CPU is quite large in some cases.

So finally, we have hardware. Well, most of us at least one of: USB 2.0, Firewire 800, Gigabit ethernet, b/g wireless. Given I've worked on some, I know shamefully little about wireless technologies. There's some pretty interesting stuff brewing, what with mesh networks etc., but for the end user, I think it's all pretty transparent. The wifi in Coffee shops etc. will probably be b/g compatible for the next few years, but I can see the introduction of new standards being a major issue. While USB 2.0 opens up the possibility for using adapters, the chipset has to be supported in the OS, which a new one won't be. Which means people will either have to learn to use Linux, or hope someone ports the inevitable Linux kernel module for the new chipset(s).

If I need to move any large files around, I transfer it over the network. But there are always going to be USB 2.0 flashdrives and external hard drives, I don't think we'll see any change here.

So to conclude, for my personal usecase, there are really only two things which will mean the demise of my PowerBook:
1. Continuation in poorly designed, resource-heavy websites
2. Migration to newer, unsuppoted wireless standards

I look forward to hearing some other perspectives on this topic.

Cheers,
Mike
