Handbrake results on late 2012 2.3ghz quad with 4g of memory

Input 42 minute eyetv recording of the walking dead recorded at 1080i. Handbrake was set to output a 1920 x 1080 mkv file normal 20 mode.

Finished the run in 30 minutes. CPU % was between 450% and 650% with the average near 525%.

Temperature and fan speed. Fans started at 2000 (temp started at 120 F) and topped out at 3800rpm. Average fan speed was about 3000. The fans didn't kick in until the temp got to 200 F. Highest temp was 208 F.

For those that have asked the unit was very quiet throughout and the case while warm to the touch was no where near hot.

I had to put my ear about a foot away from the case just to hear the fan. I was very impressed with how quiet the fan was during the handbrake run.

Can't wait till the 16g of memory I ordered for it arrives. Need that much for the VMs I have on the machine plus at 80 bucks I never have to think about the memory for the life of the machine.

very much thinking about selling off my xserve 2,1 and replacing it with a quad core 2012. it basically transcodes all day while hosting VPN, time machine, and iTunes for my parents but it sure is loud and a power sucker.

My Late2009 i7 iMac runs:

105+ fps on AppleTV preset
33fps on AppleTV 2 preset
19fps on AppleTV 3 preset

All using a Bluray MakeMKV.

I'm only getting 19fps using the AppleTV3 preset which is the same as my i7 iMac.

Handbrake is averaging 21-25 fps using the AppleTV3 preset using all cores on BluRay 1080 conversion for me. So ya, seems the same for me.

I'm confused by your post. Is 19 FPS low for you? FPS depends heavily on the format you're converting from and to. And did you expect it to be faster than your i7 iMac? Don't they have similar processors?

I tested the same convert on both machines. They both averaged 19fps.

It may have been unrealistic, but I did expect my 2012 i7 to out perform my 2009 i7.

Nah. There have been some small improvements in IPC (instructions per clock) with the i7 architecture between Nehalem, Sandy Bridge, and Ivy Bridge but by and large the cores are the same. They're all fundamentally i7s.

Also, what's the clock speed difference between your Mini and iMac? I'd guess your Mini is 2.3GHz and your iMac is 2.7GHz? It's actually pretty impressive to me if the Mini is roughly as fast as a similar chip that's clocked 20% higher.

My iMac is a 2.8Ghz 860. The Mini is a 2.7 3720QM.

So, I guess that accounts for the near identical speeds in handbrake.

That's an outstanding page for people who are considering a 'big leap' from 2009+ iMac to current Mini.

I guess I always heard about the 'tick/tock' idea but this puts it into stark reality.

during the conversion at the same speed how much power does the iMac use?

I can tell you it will pull more then the mini does.

The mini will pull under 50 watts. Add 20 for a screen thats 70.

I can guess your imac pulls more then 140 watts. so half the power is out preforming if the speed is the same.

yeah and the i7 from 2009 pulls 95 watts the i7 now pulls 45 watts.

so just at that level on a max workout you save 50 watts for every hour of hand brake 50 x 24 x 30 = 36000 watts or 36 k watts about 5 bucks a month in power or 60 a year more if you figure the gpu in the imac . say double
