App or script that generates a list of files and folders

One day an external hard drive died and I couldn't figure out what files I lost. It would be helpful to have a list of all the files.

Is there an app or script that can generate a list of all files in the external drive? maybe I could run it once in a while or autoexecute a script for it.

Take a look at the ls command. Info : https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man1/ls.1.html

Example :

# Replace nameofexternalharddrive with the actual name of your external hard drive
ls -Rp /Volumes/nameofexternalharddrive > externalhdfilelist.txt

will create a file externalhdfilelist.txt in your home folder with info about files and folders on your external hard drive.
