Question re Mail and IMAP

Is it possible to set up Mail using imap so that all my incoming and sent e-mails are saved "permanently" on my own computer? My e mail account is a gmail account.

two spontaneous ideas

1) Setup in account->Advanced to keep offline copies of your mail

2) define inbound and outbound rules to copy mails into a local destination on your mac

Thanks. Is it necessary to use rules or so long as I do #1 will the incoming accumulate in the inbox the the sent accumulate in the sent box?

Also, if I send an e mail using one computer - will the sent e mail be stored on my 2nd computer as well, or just on the machine I was using when I sent the email?

IMAP will anyway keep a version (inbound and outbound) on the server until some cleanup tasks will remove them. So a second computer with the same account and server will have access to the same mail.
I use that setup with my iMac, iPad, iPhone and iPod. Love IMAP.

On the iMac my mails are stored in ~/Library/Mail and some level deeper

~/Library/Mail/V2/<censored>/INBOX.mbox/<censored>/Data/Messages

So good idea to include that folder in backup ...
