does anybody know if when upgrading a version you need to supply the serial from old product AND proof of purchase? or is it just the serial?

If you are running vmware 4 then you will require nothing at all. Must be legit copy. When upgrading to current version vmware 5, the installer will recognize you have previous version on your computer and will continue with installing it. You should require nothing at all. Always good to have serial number just in case something goes wrong. But I have never seen a proof of purchase being required.

what i meant was the shopping cart to buy v5 requires a v4 serial number being linked to your account.

what i dont know is if i link a v4 serial to my account, will it ask for proof of purchase?

i dont have a v4 serial yet but thinking of buying one cheap in order to get upgrade price for v5.
