Messages app can send an iMessage, but you'll need to update to Mountain Lion(Messages beta period for Lion ends soon, or already has)

I received a couple around thanksgiving that animate properly in the thread and when I make them larger. Previously they did not animate so I'm not sure if it was 6.0 or 6.01 that brought the feature over.
