I am wondering if VLC will play BDMV folders and if it will then can I connect my macbook air to tv to watch it?

Will this be able to connect my MBA to the HDTV or do I need to but the $40 adapter from Apple?
I am also interested to know if I can get my MBA to mirror will I be able to watch HBOGO.
becuase I have read that HBOGO does not let you airplay videos?
