I've converted 4x3 DVDs before but haven't found a good course of action.

IIRC most of the below statements are true:

DVDs have have non-square pixels.

NTSC and Pal DVDs have opposite shapes VS square pixels

NTSC has real max 720x480 and display max of 864x480 in anamorphic.

PAL has real max 720x576 and display max of 1024x576 in anamorphic.

So here's the confusion:
NTSC world

Depending on the 4x3 DVD, sometimes each of the 2 anamorphic or "none" settings work better than the others, and it seems to fluctuate depending if the 4x3 DVD is 720x480 or 640x480, or some other odd pixel size.

I don't deal with 4x3 DVDs often enough to have discovered a pattern.

Anybody with more experience, please chime in.

When I go home for Christmas I'm going to convert my mothers Yoga 4x3 DVDs, and I don't want those Yoga instructors to look too skinny or too fat ;)

Also, sometimes what looks good on the computer looks bad on the HDTV via AppleTV and also sometimes it is vice versa.

Any help is appreciated.
