Connect your phone, open up Image Capture, select "Connecting this iPhone Opens:" and select "No Application." Drove me crazy too.

In the Applications folder 🙂

It lets you import photos from a variety of devices, and is generally quicker than iPhoto in doing that.

Go to Finder look at Applications and you will see Image Capture there.
