After being in Tokyo for a month and seeing thousands of mp3 players, I think the iPod should have a LCD display embedded in the remote, so you don’t have to take the iPod out of the case when you want to see the title of a selected song (it defeats the purpose of the remote)!!!!

What do you guys think????

On the other hand, if you like finding new artists, you may have a rotating playlist on you iPod with music which is new to you. I know I certainly don't know every song in my 30,000+ iTunes library, let alone my iPod. I rotate some unplayed songs onto the iPod so I can hear something new (pre approved by genre).

It would be nice to know what bands sound good, without fishing it out of your pocket, maybe what the title is, etc.

My iPod has about 5200 songs...not being a human db, I would say that I've only got a handle on 75% of the artists, and 60% of the titles. If you are using the iPod fully (especailly with the 10 & 20GB models), expect to forget a name or two.

I often buy 5-10 CDs at a time, so after ripping them and transferring them to my iPod, that's 50 to 100 songs that I haven't heard before.

Slightly off the topic, I'd like to see the iPod be able to sync data with iTunes, i.e. play count etc.

i've got over 60GB of music that gets rotated on my iPod, lots of video game remixes, lots of covers, lots of comedy, and lots of ska, punk, alternative....
after awhile some bands start to sound the same btw....and it would be nice to have an LCD like my sharp minidisc...fish and all ;)
oh well, in my dreams i guess...

Don't you hate it when Bill Cosby does his 'Less Than Jake' impression? That always catches me off guard.:D

I think this is a great idea, I dont know about you but how do you remember the exact order of every song in your ipod? I cant and a LCD on the remote would be awesome, they shouldnt upgrade the price though because this is something they should have had from the beginging.

what really gets me is when is when george carlin does his 'Less Than Jake' impression...it really does catch me off guard! really!;)

on another note, it would also be nice for when i have my iPod on random...maybe we should just get some 3rd party developer to do it...

LCD remote is a must!

I totally agree and have often thought the same thing. When looking at the remote of the iPod, it's easy to tell it was designed by a computer company and not a consumer electronics company. If Apple truly wishes to compete with the likes of Sony then they are going to have to take a different approach to designing HW like the iPod.

An LCD display on the remote is a must! It's not that a person doesn't know all the songs on his or her iPod (although they may not), but how does one navigate through all the playlists, artists, songs, and even contacts without taking the darn thing out of your pocket and then out of it's protective case. I would say that the iPod needs an LCD remote more than any other media player because of the vast amount of data you have to sort through to get to the title you want to hear.

Easy navigation is the primary purpose of a remote control is it not? The iPod's remote needs to be re-thought and re-designed.

What I mean is, if a song on my computer has a playcount of zero, but I've heard it 10 times on my iPod, the iPod would update my computer next time it's connected, so that iTunes would also show a playcount of 10 on that song.

many would disagree and say it's not a necessary feature, but i have to agree-- that's one of those touches that apple used to be famous for. hell, things in jaguar *still* impress me by their subtle graces, yet the iPod seems very basic and bare--

LCD remote would be nice. How would you design the remote so that it allows easy navigation without having a big ugly device hanging off your headphones? Minidisc remotes don't have to contend with the complexity the iPod presents. For the ultimate "Cool" factor I imagine a wireless iPod remote that also works with iTunes (via bluetooth?). More bandwidth (deeper bass)/syncable eq adjustable from remote would be sweet as well.

It does as far as I can tell. However, I think it only works if you play the music in your iPod only. I listen to many songs during the morning and evening commute but rarely from my computer. When I plug my iPod in for update or charging, I can see the Last Played timestamp of many songs corresponse to the time of my commutes. This works with Play Count too.

I think if you play the song in your iPod AND iTunes, the value in iTunes take precedence.

I constantly switch songs while I am driving, and I do not want to kill anybody while pulling my iPod out of my pocket or belt clip!!!
A LCD remote would be a superb addition!!!

so instead of looking at your ipod which is easy to read, you would rather look at a tiny lcd screen and watch as the name of the artist and song scroll across it...while you are driving and killing pedestrians...real nice

I've just got home from work and I've been listening to music on my iPod all day and I've started listening to music from iTunes - so just for fun I plugged in my iPod and the play counts all updated. I'd been listening to the same tracks. It looks like the iPod playcounts are simply added to the iTunes then zero'd for the next sync.

That statement itself is ignorant.

Like many other people, I'm constantly ripping new CD's from artists I'm not familiar with. CD's friends have let me borrow so I can try new music. CD's of new releases from artists I already enjoy, but haven't heard the tracks yet. CD's of classical music, where an LCD screen would come in very handy. The list is endless on why one would have music on their iPod that they're not familiar with. I'm actually at a loss for words to explain how ignorant you can be to KNOW every song that is on your iPod. . .to me, that shows me how unwilling you are to try out new music.

Just a thought.

When the iPod was released without a remote, but with the capability of having one, I thought it was delayed because they realised they needed a remote with a display that allows you go through you library just as easily as you can on an iPod.

While it is not essential for everyone, I think we should at least have a choice of having one because at the moment Apple is lagging behind Sony in this department. It needn't be LCD, an OLED might better. My idea of of a remote would be one that is circular buyt flattened on one side. A jog-dial (as seen in Sony Clie or phones which might be a problem) would be inside and go round the circumference of the circular halve of the remote. The flat side would be the usual controls (volume, skip, play, stop, hold, may be a button for EQ and light etc). The whole of the face is the display, with a clip at the back. I'm sure Apple can do better than this, but they can pull this off i.e. putting the music playing interface of iPod onto a remote) it would be amazing, possibly as amazing as the iPod itself.

(Maybe implement an optional mic in it as well, that would be great)

It *does* do that, as I have said in my last post. Just to be sure I did. I plugged in my ipod after a day or two and the playcounts all got updated. Try it yourself...
