QuickTime coming for mobile phones in Japan

Apple's QuickTime is set to "make headway as an audio and video delivery platform for mobile phones in Japan, with new standards-compatible software on its way and a fresh endorsement by leading wireless carrier NTT DoCoMo," reports c|net. According to the article, in the coming weeks, Apple will introduce a new version of QuickTime 6, with support for 3GPP, or 3rd Generation Partnership Project — telecommunications standards for mobile systems, which is built on the MPEG-4 standard. DoCoMo, which has about 44 million subscribers, said it will introduce three new 3G mobile phones in the next several weeks that will allow people to view video wirelessly and perform other online activities with QuickTime.

awesome! maybe we are using our cell phones for too much but the idea of watching music videos on my cell phone via quicktime is awesome, and imagine while your out you decide to see a movie and you can watch all the quicktime trailers on your cellphone to decide which one to see!!! cant wait for it to reach the states, but sadly the US is far far behind Japan on cellphone technology.

Well, I do not see anything fun in watching a music video in a cell phone, is like watching it on a computer monitor "Ohh, cool" and you won't do it again.

Usually every body that can run animations in cell phones is because they have a porn, they do it once and that is it. The good thing would be to watch tv while you are in a bus or something like that, other wise, I do not see the real utility besides being a cool feature.

if nothing else than a novelty, this technology would be a huge hit in the cell-phone chic USA. but i can see it for other uses... videophone would be wonderful, and might finally catch on (lets face it-- we'll never see proper videophone on hardlines unless we switch to an all-new network) and i think videophone is a toy people *really* want. it's conspicuous consumerism at it's worst, but *everyone* will want to be seen with one of these...

now what we need is to merge this with cars with DVD players and LCD status displays, so you can bluetooth video to the displays... you think people bitch about driving with cell phones now

Well, you can't even imagine the amazing progress in cellphone technology in other countries! To send an SMS or to call somebody I have to try to find a place in the apartment, where the level of signal is high enough... And it is a hard thing to do, and I rarely succeed. So... This news has nothing common with the reality for me. The only good thing is that it'll be quicktime, not windows Media.
And there is silence here on the forums about video-on-demand services (like Movielink) that aren't QuickTime compatible...

Gotta agree with Flickta! In South Korea, there's fierce competition between three cellphone service providers for market share and they're offering an increasing array of video via cellphone services ... and they have significantly higher monthly fees than found in the US. The real news is that people are paying the fees and using the services. It's only a matter of time until the US market realizes how far behind it is - and how the entrenched telephone oligopolies are content to keep it behind to capitalize on their prior investments rather than develop new onews (which is riskier).
