Some interesting notes from last week

* Both Iowa and South Dakota officially received their first LTE deployments from AT&T today. Only Montana, North Dakota, and Vermont are still waiting for their first taste of AT&T LTE. As a native Iowan, I'm glad to see this!

* By June 12th, AT&T has already launched LTE in more markets during June (39) than they did all of May (31). AT&T launched 47 markets during April, which AT&T will best if they launch nine more markets during the last eighteen days of June.

* AT&T clearly loves to launch on Wednesdays. 65% of all 2013 launches have come on Wednesdays.

* AT&T has now launched LTE in 278 markets, of which 143 markets -- 51% -- have come during 2013. This demonstrates how rapidly AT&T is launching markets compared to their previous pace.
September 19, 2011 through December 31, 2012 (15.5 months): 135 LTE markets launched
January 1, 2013 through June 12, 2013 (5.5 months): 143 LTE markets launched

* The official first day of summer (in the astronomical sense, which most people use) is June 21 and summer ends on September 21. AT&T promised to roll out LTE in 79 new markets by the end of "summer". Of those 79 markets, AT&T has already launched 45 (56%), nine days before summer officially begins. They still have three plus months to complete the remaining 44%.

* On April 10th, AT&T announced 77 (later 79) markets that would launch "this summer". Since April 11th, AT&T has launched 97 markets, of which 45 were from the pre-announced list. This means 53% of LTE launches have continued to come as stealth markets that we do not know about until the day they launch. This should be comforting to anyone whose market didn't make the pre-announced list -- well over half of the new launches aren't from that list anyway.

I've been tracking these LTE deployments as a way of learning more about AT&T's practices and what we can expect. I'd say we've already learned quite a bit just watching 2013. It's been fun to watch.

#137 Peoria IL now has LTE. AT&T hasn't announced or even shows it on the map.

Only 3 towers have it. The coverage is super spotty. I called at&t and they told me that LTE is not officially launching until the Fall, but they upgraded some of the towers early when they were doing maintenance on them.

There are still huge parts of Denver Colorado without LTE.

Yup I Know its driving me nuts, how far is "Denver" considered do you know? I'm not getting any LTE on C-470 going West or East, is this still considered Denver? I mean there are cities near by but Denver is still pretty close.

It depends on what part of C-470 you are on.
Two blocks west of where I live, I can get 40 Mbps downloads on my iPad. I go home which is two blocks east of where I get 40Mbps downloads and LTE is gone.

There are two areas in my house where I can pick up a weak LTE signal to get anywhere from 1-10Mbps down, but that occurs only at night. Once daylight gets here, its back to crappy 4G/edge speeds.

4G by no means should be crappy at least not for me. As for which part I was thinking about the C-470 part that goes west towards Golden. Since Golden is fairly close t Denver I was thinking maybe they would have it covered. I don't use my HTC much in the car and when I do I see the 4G never seen LTE; unless I'm in Denver area (Cherry Creek area).

Oh, I have news, 4G here is crappy. Check out this speed test I just did on my iPad. Remember, it's daylight now so this is the best I can get. I don't have an iPhone 5 so my iPad is the only LTE capable device I have.

Some people might not know if they always have LTE off but I just found out recently that they launched LTE in Pensacola in November.

Be patient folks, you don't want it to be a terrible launch the way 3g was years back. Its been pretty much a success wherever it has been rolled out
