Hi,
Have a MacBook pro 2008 running lion. I want to upgrade to Yosemite. Do I need to bu lion if I want to revert back from Yosemite?

I don't have a mac based external drive
Based on research, this model hardware will accept Yosemite
I have no disk for lion
I have no current files that I need to save
Lion 10.7.5 was downloaded through iTunes by previous owner
Will be giving this to my daughter and just want the most current os
I have Yosemite downloaded from app store ready to install

Thanks, sorry if this is a very basic question but I'm new to mac...

Welcome to the forums! In order to restore OS X Lion onto that Mac since the installer is under another Apple ID would be to repurchase Lion. This however is not necessary as long as you find OS X Yosemite to work fine. You will be able to purchase Lion here.

Your MacBook Pro is capable of running OS X Yosemite. By default OS X Yosemite will upgrade in place of Lion and keep all files and applications. You should still have a working backup of your machine as with any OS upgrade.
