Problem with smtp server settings when trying to connect school email via apple mail

this information is given by the school to be used for outlook
Exchange account information
The incoming server address is: imap4.myschool.ac.uk
The outgoing server address is: smtp.myschool.ac.uk
(Note: The SMTP server will only work if you are connected directly to the University network. If you are connecting off-campus then you need to enter the SMTP address provided by your ISP. You will need to contact your service provider if you do not know this address.)
Your username must be entered in the format ad\username, i.e. ad\cczsith
The password required is your Novell password.

When the above information has been entered click on the ‘More Settings’ button
Click on the Advanced tab
For the Incoming server, tick the option for ‘This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)
Click Ok
Click Next and then Finish.


This info is given to be used with outlook
of course, i need to open it off-campus
when i try apple mail
i choose these settings
1- IMAP
2- i put account info (imap)
3- the problem
the smtp authentication fails
i dont know how to put smtp.myschool.ac.uk and mail.virgin.net together to authenticate and connect to the mail server


anyone understand?
anyone can hlep?

So if I understand your question, you're trying to connect to your school IMAP account while you're off campus, and your Apple Mail setup can't find your school SMTP server?

If this is your question, then what is happening is understandable. Your smtp.myschool.ac.uk SMTP server will only be accessible if you're connected to the internet through your school connection. As soon as you connect from home, it will disappear and you will need to use the SMTP server provided by the ISP you're connecting through (Virgin in your case?). Swapping SMTP servers every time you swap connections is a pain, so I use the SMTP server provided via my Fastmail subscription, which works everywhere. As an alternative you could follow the directions here and try enabling the SMTP server on your Mac. My apologies if I have misunderstood your question.

but from what u r saying, i should only put the virgin smtp server

i just put the outgoing mail server as mail.virgin.net with no authentication
and i am in

Inbound and Outbound e-mail use completely different protocols. IMAP is used for inbound e-mail and is a protocol for downloading e-mail from your mailbox to your mail client (applemail). SMTP is a protocol for sending e-mail and the two are as different as chalk and cheese.

Typically, most institutions will require you to use your ISP's SMTP server rather than their SMTP server is so that they can ensure people who are on the Internet cannot use their SMTP server to send e-mail to just anyone on the Internet - such use of a mail server is called open-relaying and is v-bad.

Most institutions will secure their SMTP server by saying that they only accept e-mail addressed TO a recipient they know about on their systems, or e-mail being send FROM a machine on their own network. This allows incoming mail to an organisation and outgoing mail from their own network.

yeah it does help, i am actually a noob

however, google has enabled IMAP and i use their smtp server to reply to emails

however, can i use their smtp with their authentication to send an email using my schools email

or can i use my .mac smtp server to do that?

i tried it and i received a message most likely saying, we wont allow u to send this unless u are sending from your .mac or gmail email.
