never had to replace an LCD before so this is foreign to me.

Can i put any 17" display panel in a powerbook?

currently it has the lower 1440*900 panel which doesn't work so is there any major issue with installing a higher resolution one?

given that the final rev. 17" powerbooks had 1680*1050 and the same 128mb VRAM card.

any advice/links would be helpful

The card is capable, its just the connection that worries me. I would imagine the wiring is different. Not worth the risk of frying the logic board. What exactly is wrong with the existing LCD?

it's cracked! everything else works fine.

i have managed to locate a replacement LCD for a HR G4 17" powerbook.

my thinking(i could be wrong) is that it should slot straight into the previous revision 17" powerbook and give me some more screen real estate?
