Macbook doesn't hibernate when battery is low

When the battery hits 3% I receive a warning that I should switch over to the ac adapter otherwise the macbook will hibernate. I left it to run down, but instead of hibernating the macbook switched off and I lost everything.

Shouldn't the macbook save everything to the memory so when switched back on it should be how it was left before the battery drains?

Macbook it around 6-7 months old, battery has done 60 cycles, 100% health.

You should try a proper calibration of the battery, as Apple suggests:

I know it should shut itself of during the calibration process. If that happens leave it alone for at least the time indicated int he calibration procedure, then recharge. During the procedure save the data when the battery gets low to avoid losses of data.
