How can you insert a picture of an arrow (up, down, left, right) without using the mouse at all?

First, In System Preferences, under International, in the Input Menu tab, check the box next to the Unicode Hex Input method.

Then, to enter the symbols, make sure the U.H.I. method is selected (use shift-command-spacebar to switch to it, if necessary) and then hold down shift and option while typing 2190, 2191, 2192, or 2193 for left, up, right, and down, respectively.

The mac keyboard allows for all sorts of shortcuts for iPhone users, so you can set up a macro to replace a certain phrase with any character set you like.

FOR EXAMPLE...

-> replaces with → when I put a space after it. I don't have a use for the other directions, really.

Also, I have used some of the cute emojis for things like:
:emb: → (ノ﹏ヽ)
 → ( ˘ω˘ )☞♡☜( ˘ω˘ )
zomg → (°o°;)

It is the best solution, imho.
