I am in the market for a new(er) computer, and the new mac mini has hit the sweet spot for my budget. I really like the features and general power/speed of the new mini. A friend suggested an older but seemingly still fast and powerful PowerMac G5 which are going for roughly the same price as a mini, on ebay.

Currently I have a Quicksilver G4 with 933mhz, 1.5GB RAM and it runs leopard decently, but i'd like to have a bit more fun.

Would I be foolish to get the G5? Any advice, logic would be greatly appreciated.

Few months back I was wondering the same thing,

I went for the G5 because I got an amazing deal and it looked superb!
The MacMini will blow the G5 away unless you get the quad G5 but they're still pretty expensive and still a little bit slower on some tasks.

I'd say play safe, get a mini.
If you find yourself a one in a lifetime deal for a G5 go for it.
But otherwise stick with the mini.

Get a dual core 2.3 G5. It has The same processing power, faster memory and FAR better graphics power.
