Changing weapons in DOOM classic

Ok I haven't been able to figure out how to change weapons. Is it even possible?

Touch the face of the marine - it brings up a weapons switch screen.

Doom Weapon Chainsaw

When you get hold of the chainsaw for some reason to change weapon i have to keep my finger on the screen where you tap initailly just at the weapon/face but then I find i need to and slide it up to the weapon of choice otherwise if i take my finger off it just defaults back to the chainsaw. FRu
