Upgrading from paid iPhone apps to paid iPad apps

Say I bought Words with Friends for the iPhone.. if I want to put it on my iPad, will I be stuck with the iPhone version, or will I be able to upgrade to the "HD" version without paying the extra $$?

I guess it depends on the developer, anyone have experience with apps allowing free upgrades to iPad versions??

If its not a universal app, you'll have to update.

Which... I can see why it happens, developer has to make a new version... but sucks for the consumers.

I'm still using the iPhone version of Plants vs Zombies on my iPad for that reason...
