If I understand all the new wrinkles, even the 3G now requires hashes to go back to 4.x.x firmware.

The bootrom doesn't matter. Apple still isn't signing 4.0. Unless you have the blobs stored, you are out of luck.

If you have a 3G, you can go back to versions such as 3.1.3 and 3.1.2 but you can't go back to 4.0 but I am guessing you have an iPhone 4.
