help! using iphone4 from overseas in usa

Hi,
I am from Singapore and I would be doing an exchange programe in University of Michigan in 2011. Would I be able to get a prepaid card for the 4 months that i will be there? or is there a data plan that i can purchase for only 4 months?

Yes, only if your iphone 4 is officially unlocked it will accept foreign sim cards.
Or if you JB and unlock it yourself.
 
I have a similar question: I will be going to the UK and bought my iPhone 4 in the US. Will a store be able to unlock it there (do they have the ability)?

I thought I read a few months ago that at least one UK carrier would unlock for free, all the customer had to do was bring the iPhone in.

Any help would be appreciated,
