When is Apple going to support

4G

When it's deployed en masse.

When it doesn't suck.

video conferencing to people NOT on an iphone

When the iPhone 4 comes out and developers submit applications that do that. Unlike in the Android Market, there are actually worth-while applications in the App Store. It's pretty awesome.

True multitasking

When 4.0 comes out. Although in your case "true" really just means "bloated". There's no reason for the whole application to run in the background when I can't see it other than to waste CPU cycles and battery power.

native tethering

In 2009.

I could go on....

Please do.

Nuts to that. The App Store is a sea of games and gimmicks. While the Android Market is still a bit primitive, it has some apps which are way more useful. Such as reminder apps which don't have to rely on flaky push notifications. Apps which can automatically change the settings of your phone based on what location you're in. (For example, when I'm in the vicinity of my office, turn my phone to silent.) Apps which aren't possible on the App Store due to the restrictions and sandboxing.

Besides the Evo, I also have an iPad and full access to the app store. Its decent at best. 80% of it is kid stuff and useless crap I would never use. The games are great though. Thats always what the iPhone seemed to be about to me. It was the anti Windows phone just as the Mac is an Anti Windows machine. However, its too geared towards entertainment and kids. Android fits right in the middle between the two. Its got fun and games stuff but HTC also makes powerful devices that integrate and sync with more important stuff, so we can use it for business too.

Do you have a specs fetish? Is it a requirement of owning an android phone?

It's all about the numbers, man! :D

They love to spout numbers, such as the 8 megapixel camera. I have an EVO. I know how compressed that HD video is.

iPhone haters, why are you here?

I have never visited a single Android blog let alone posting in one. Is the Android blog too dull for you, or is spreading the hatred more interesting?

Maybe some of us like both the iphone and android phones. Some of us simply like the Evo better. got a problem with that?

Or download dropcap2 and take screen shots in one button.

On a side note, since I got my nexus on January, devs and hackers over at XDA have released updates and mods to make it feel like I get a new phone every months. 720p video recording, super fast processing and almost 2 day battery life without a charge... Now when Froyo drops their source for the devs to get their hands on, the nexus will be flying even more. Froyo browser is the fastest in the world, benchmarks say.

Android has made SO much progress in HALF the time that it has taken apple to implement such things as copy and paste (2 years?), and multitasking. I mean, multithreading.

And for the people that say multitasking "bloats" the phone and kills battery life? My phone has 512mb of ram and its always almost full with my 35+ applications constantly "running" in the background, yet I still get 1.5+ days of battery life... Plus, I IM a lot and use google talk so when i am in the middle of some conversations with friends, i'd like to be able to switch to my browser and STILL receive updates in real time for new IM's... Another advantage of true multitasking over crap multithreading. People that say "we don't want true multitasking" are the sheep that listen to everything Jobs says. They are the people that don't know WHAT they want because they are blinded by the man. Why have an opinion when Jobs already has one for ya, right?

Lastly, the only thing that the iPhone will have on any other phone out there is their "retina' display.

PS. I just spoke that whole post into my phone without typing 1 word :)

Gotta love android.

If only the iphone could do that.. Oh wait dragon dictation...

I try and stay out of the andoid ios debate for the most part simply because i realize that they both have there strengths and mainly because certain people will always argue for one or the other.

Personally the iphone is the best phone i have used and I have no desire to switch to another phone so i will enjoy my iphone and ignore the iphone haters

Is dragon dictation integrated into the keyboard or is it a third party app that you have to use and send the text to SMS or email programs?

3rd party but it works quite well and then you can just copy paste wherever you please. Is there dictation software built into the android os?

Yeah There is a microphone button on all keyboatds. There is also dictation built into the hardware search button so thay you can search directions, call people, send a text to specific contact, etc.

It's Also much easier to just prress the search button on my home screen And say "directions to MGM Las Vegas" than have to search for it in maps or the browser. Navigation is as easy as speaking.

I have Dragon Dictation on my iPad and its a toy compared to the speech to text on my Evo. As one of the very few here who uses BOTH the iPhone OS and Android daily, I much prefer Android. Here is my personal list of the advantages Android has over the iPhone OS

4G (Sprint)
Flash
Google maps with navigation
No cap on 4G data (2GB max on AT&T)
Notification system
Widgets
Live wallpapers
Hotspot for 8 other devices (Evo)
Free tethering (Froyo)
Speech to text on every keyboard screen
Video chat over 3G/4G (Not just wifi like iPhone 4)
Screen size (Evo)
Open and fully customizable OS
Removable memory
Removable battery
Double the RAM (256MB vs 512MB)
HDMI out

To add...

Once FroYo comes out for the Nexus, the JIT compiler speed up third party applications even more (400-500% in some cases). What does this mean? That while you won't get real world 400-500% scenarios, you will see that the hardware has even more resources left over for the Android OS, even when running intensive applications. Score another for Android.

I tried out Dragon Dictation on my friends iPhone this morning, and its garbage. You have to open the app, speak your words, then choose to essentially cut and paste that into the app that you want to use that text in. Terrible. I'm surprised Apple hasn't implemented this feature. Let me say, its very handy for texting while driving.

Another feature of 2.2 that outshines Apple? Chrome to Phone. How many times have I looked up information only to have to go to my phone again and look it up all over? Countless. Now I just press a button and all that information is pushed to my phone.

I went from an iPhone 3g to a Nexus back in January, and couldn't be happier. I'll be honest that when the leaks of the iPhone 4g came out, I was doubting my nexus because the look of the iPhone is very appealing to me. I was very much anticipating WWDC and all of the iPhone announcements... However I was vastly disappointed. 720p camera? Was a little jealous of it. Then it was brought to the Nexus and it works great. Shot 1gb worth of 720p movies at the Zoo with my kids yesterday. Facetime? Would never use it. If i ever had the NEED to use it, the Nexus supports it with Qik.

Another thing i love about my nexus? I can do everything on my phone, without a need to hook up to a computer. Updating to a new ROM? Just backup my system state to my SD card, download the ROM, and flash it through recovery. Not once does this phone touch a USB cable. Don't like the flashed ROM? Restore my system state backup and everything is good as new. Want to watch last nights "The Office" episode? Browse to Hulu and watch it right on the train to work with flash. Without crashing :) Battery low after all this action? Take off my back cover and pop in a backup and WhaLA - more juice.

About the Appstore... Jobs won't open it up because he doesnt want porn on the devices? Newsflash Steve-o mobile porn sites OPTIMIZED for the iPhone. How much worse will apps make it than it is now? Get real. Also, Jobs doesn't want apps to crash? They will crash with the low spec of 256mb of RAM with this new and "intuitive" multi-threading. Didn't the iPad have that problem with safari when it first came out? There are 200,000+ apps on the appstore for one reason - money. Apple is a cash cow, and that's why programmers flock to it. It's a shame though that Jobs won't allow them the freedom in turn for helping make the iPhone so popular.

Android has so many more choices when it comes to phones. While the EVO and the Incredible are very nice devices, the thing I LOVE about my Nexus is that it has major players when it comes to Dev support, and it's Google's baby -- meaning we get all the updates first. By the time the Major carriers optimize the FroYo update for their flagship phones, Nexus owners will already have 10 hacked FroYo custom ROMS to choose from.

Awful battery life
Buggy OS
Crashing Apps
Slow Responsiveness
Devices are outdated in 2-3 months of purchase

Awful Battery life? I get over 36 hours of constant use before HAVING to charge my phone.

Buggy OS? Not when you have 10 devs working nonstop to kink out the bugs that Google missed. Don't have to wait for Google to release updates when everything is open source :)

Crashing Apps? I believe I had more apps crash on my 3G than on my Nexus.

Slow Responsiveness? My Nexus is the fastest phone I have ever used. Blows away my friend's 3GS.

Devices are outdated in 2-3 Months? I have had my Nexus one for 6 months, and the hardware is STILL better than the iPhone 4g that is YET to be released. Not only that, my Android updates are plentiful. There is always a new feature (720p) to be unlocked that makes me look at my Nexus and fall in love all over again.

My opinion may be a little irrevelant since I haven't used the newest android phone- but I spend a fortune on a mytouch when it was released because I wanted a nice smartphone and I wanted to stay with T-Mobile.
I am now selling my mytouch after using it for almost a year- and paying the ETF with T-Mobile.
My husband had a jailbroken original iPhone, and it was always faster than my android phone. His apps opened faster. His phone NEVER froze...when mine froze all the time. He could get all his updates at once...instead of downloading each update one at a time. That gets really annoying when you have 12 updates and your phone is slow. At first I loved the adroid platfrom because it allowed me to customize my phone. But as time went on I hated the apps that I had to use to customize- since they always slowed my phone down so much. Multitasking was never very good- since I always had to kill apps and the task killer would even freeze or crash my phone from time to time (update to update).
I know I'm preaching to the choir, but since my change of heart is so recent I wanted to share it. I understand I didn't have the best and brightest Android phone...but my months of use with the phone I did have left a bad taste in my mouth.
I'm now using a Virgin mobile phone that can't do more than make calls and send texts. But at least it works when I need it. I couldn't say that for the mytouch.
I love apple products but didn't want to pay an ETF to switch to an iPhone. I wasn't planning on going to at&t when I canceled my T-Mobile account, but after seeing the iPhone 4...I think it will be hard not to get one.

Let me say, its very handy for texting while driving.

Can you explain this a little. I'm assuming that you're saying that you can speak, and have it paste what you say, as text, into your SMS, or Android texting App.

Does it also read your received texts, and give them to you as voice while you're driving so you don't have to actually read them?

Thanks In Advance

I don't know about it reading them to you (though it's probably possible) but yes, it will interpret your speech and then "paste" the text into whatever form field you have selected.

Basically, in this case, to send a text you would be in the reply field which brings up a keyboard just like the iPhone OS, except, there is a little microphone button on the keyboard that when pressed will listen to you speak, interpret your text, and paste it into the reply field for you so you never have to type a word. It supposedly works pretty well (you can try out the service using Google's iPhone app to speak to search since it uses the same server tech that android taps into for speech to text).

As far as text to speech I know the iPhone has that option configurable in Accessibility settings but I've never tried it. I have a 3GS but two of my friends use Nexus one's and I've gotta say this is a really awesome feature.

I don't own an android phone...yet, still an iphone owner, but if the LG dare can speak the text back to you then I would think that the N1, Evo, or Incredible could...but I don't know for sure.

And I definitely agree that this is a useful feature, not so much the ability to hear the text back to you, but to speak your text to the phone is really neat...IMO.
