I want to know if the display of the Imac is as good as the new apple ALUM displays.

if i'm not mistaken, the 20 inch is the same LCD as is used in the alum displays.
the 17 inch is a lower quality

I didn't pay much attention to the G5 iMac's screen when I saw it, but I doubt it's the same panel used in the new aluminum displays. I know the G4 iMac used a 17'' panel with a poor vertical viewing angle, which the plastic cinema displays didn't suffer from.

I read somewhere on the forum here that the 20" iMac has the same screen as the "older" 20" displays.

Yes the 20" iMac uses the same display as the Aluminum 20" display. The 20" display doesn't use the same technology as the new 23" and 30" displays.

The 17" display is the only CURRENT 17" widescreen display Apple uses so its not the same the 17" LCD you can buy standalone. That display isn't in widescreen format.

I've read somewhere (don't remember where) that Apple will be releasing a 17" widescreen display in early 2005 with the aluminum casing.

Nice, I hadn't heard that. It would definitely make sense for Apple to continue updating and selling the 17" model though, as I see a need for 17" LCD displays for quite some time yet - not everyone needs a 20" display, and 17" displays will become quite attractive, cost-effective solutions for many people as the prices continue to drop.
