Macintosh HD could be considered the root path, as Macintosh HD is the name (given my Mac OS X, you can change it) of the HDD Mac OS X resides on on new Macs.
The folders in this root path are Library, Applications, Users and System and some others, that are hidden.

Also have a look at the following links to learn more about Mac OS X:

That is not the root PATH.

The path of what you're mentioning is "/Volumes/Macintosh HD".

The root path is /

Yes, OS X is unix, and like all other *nixes the logical root is /

Unlike Windows there is a clear separation of the logical layout of the file system and the physical layout of the file system.

You'll find that layout to be infinitely superior. It's one of the main reasons I refuse to ever use a windows box again.

Thanks guys for all your support.

What i ment by root path (WIndows C:\) is the local disk c:\

Maybe that was a mistake.

Nevertheless, i think that both Macintosh HD/ ot simply / replace the C:\ .

Am i right?

Thanks again

If you have to write a path, you have to write / for the root.

If you have to write only the path for a disk X, it is /Volumes/X

But a disk can be mounted to other directories, so that you don't need to start your path with /Volumes/diskname

The boot disk is mounted on /
