I'm going to edge my bets on wireless sync with iOS4.2 and iTunes, and iOS backups to be saved on the cloud.

Thoughts?

That would require an iTunes update. Not likely, given Friday's 10.1 release.

Whatever the announcement is, it's almost certainly content-related.

itunes through a web based interface
a new costly service to have your iTunes library in the cloud
a subscription model for music
the beatles on i tunes
90 sec preview
a separation of the stores so that you don't search accross all content when all you want is a movie: App store, Movies, Books, Music

that pretty much is it (my guess that is).

LOL!

Nice! I like all of these.

Why would that be related to iTunes though?

Because its delivered through itunes, hence from itunes.

I am also very confused due to the recent 10.1 update, how are they are going to do anything significant without making another major update

Apple has had a busy year. iP4, MBA, iPad, iPods, 4.0, 4.1, 4.2, ATV2, MBP, 27" CD, Magic Trackpad, etc. And next year looks even more action-packed.

Did you mean 27" LCD? Because 27" CD's would be an interesting twist for Apple -- especially after removing the CD from the iTunes logo. :p

In his blog post he says that iTunes is where you get the update. His second guess is more appletv content deals. Gruber is usually pretty spot-on, but those guesses are pretty bad.

Rainy Clouds

Cloud Based Storage is such BAD idea. The internet goes down, A LOT. We just had a 37 hour outage. All our phone company would say is, "We are having internet connectivity issues. Thank you for your patience while we work on the issue." This happens often. If my computer could only run when the internet was there I would not be able to do my work. As it is the outages are a royal pain. No they want to put my music on the net so I can only listen when the net is there? Bad idea. Bad.

Gruber says its 4.2, surely more than that !!!!

Yep, must be Hong Kong and China have the iPad, but there's no new splash on their Apple pages. 4.2 makes more of an impact for iPad users so it's not likely that is it.

It's iTunes content/store related not software I'm pretty sure of that myself.:)

Add to that;
Bluewooth / wifi syncing of ipod touch / iphone / ipad to itunes on Mac / PC

They haven't even released 4.2 for all idevices and AFAIK there's no such feature on iOS 4.2.
Since they've got the data centre in place it has something to do with access to large amounts of data such as a cloud.
Will see tomorrow.

Are those things that would make for a day you'll never forget?

For people who listen to music constantly, sure. For me, not so much. I will bet anyone that I will forget the day... perhaps within minutes.
iTunes + Unforgettable news = meh

On the iTunes page of the Apple UK site it shows this picture (note no cable in view...?)
sync20100901.jpg

And also says:
"Improved syncing. Feed your devices, faster.
A simpler way to sync.
iTunes gives you even better ways to sync your media from your computer to your iPhone, iPad or iPod."

But isn't exactly clear on what these "better ways" are, maybe it's something that will only come to light with iOS4.2...

Who cares about the Beatles on iTunes, everyone already has all of their songs ... do you think iTunes will start carrying a new Beatles album or something?

iTunes on the cloud. Am I the only one that thinks it would be an epic hack for someone to get in there and replace all the music links on the Apple cloud servers with Rick Astley? "Never gonna give you up..."

It's a bad, bad guess.

Yeah, but that's a bit of a reach "announcement for iOS" would make more sense if it was just 4.2, and we all know that it's coming any way.

I still think it's related to the iTunes store, and won't require any changes to the iTunes app itself.

dude you have no idea what you're talking about. the way cloud based works is iTunes scans your music library, which "unlocks" those songs to be streamed from the cloud. that way you keep the mp3 on your computer, and your phone/computer will be able to stream directly from apple's servers. Nothing forces you to delete your mp3s, and nothing prevents you from carrying the mp3 on your ipod, but cloud based makes it so you don't HAVE to have the mp anymore. It's nothing but WIN. I imagine any song purchased on itunes will be downloaded and unlocked in the cloud at the same time.

at least this was how Lala.com worked before apple bought it and shut it down.

in re. subscription service. They're talking about iTunes only. They're not saying anything about iOS devices? I don't see much use out of a subscription service I can only access at home on my main computer...

Your downloadable music isn't going anywhere. It's an additional way to listen to your music, not a replacement.
