Some may recall Apple dropped the price of the iPhone 1 right after launch and rebated early adopters to adjust for it. When the iPad was launched Steve was asked about precisely this. He stated there was margin for a price drop "if needed". It was not needed.

This could be an effective V 2.0 discount by adding value for the same hard cost, keeping in mind more of the set-up costs are sunk and the network costs have been embedded into all products system wide.

Besides, whatever he wants to sell you next needs a better viewer to utilize it.

Rocketman

I/O wanted. Now!

I hope the iPad takes on the same design style as the iPhone 4... That white one in the concept picture looks amazing!

2048x1536 is starting to sound a little more plausible... :D

Apple doesn't call it that because it is only HD with a 16:9 aspect ratio (1280x720 or 1920x1080) by the industry standard (ATSC table 3 in America). The iPad is not HD, unless you're using the term loosely, e.g. better than an analog TV, or better than VGA. But that's not what you meant, since you qualify is as "industry standard".

But I was talking about iTunes content, not the iPad.

Regarding the iPad2's retina display, it appears that there is a big possibility that it will be twice the size.

9to5Mac also include an article where it states that Apple documentation mentions 2x size app icons for the iPad. http://www.9to5mac.com/47499/ipad-2x

If this is the case, then the next gen iPad will be able to really challenge the e-reader/tablet competition.

Whats the point if having such high resolution screen on a 9inch device? I much rather have then knock off 100 dollars off the base model and keep the corrent screen (which is beautifully sharp) the put a more expencive marketing gimmick screen.

My imac doesnt support that resolution and it has a 21 inch screen. Wy would i need/want it on a tablet?

One word, "SPELLCHECK".

Boy, I'm glad I didn't buy 1st Gen! LOL!

So to be consistent you're not going to buy the iPad 2 right?
Because next year's will be even better!
See how flawed your logic is?
Thinking that way you'll never buy anything.
Meanwhile we smart people will have enjoyed out iPads for a year, and sell them for a good price.
A whole year of iPad use for $100-$200 dollars(probably less)?What a deal!
Enjoy waiting!

I think he was referring to iTunes, where video content is 720p. No one is saying the iPad 1 is HD because it clearly isn't. But it's looking like the iPad 2 will rectify that deficiency in spades.

That's not the point. Some people, like me, didn't buy the iPad 1 because there were obvious shortcomings--no cameras and poor resolution screen--that made the iPad a poor long-term investment for me and the usage I would get out of it. It appears the iPad 2 will correct both shortcomings. And I will gladly purchase on Day 1 assuming it does. If it doesn't, then I will wait for iPad 3.

This is not to say that the iPad was a bad investment for anybody, as there are myriad reasons to purchase a device as versatile as the iPad.

Not sure why items like this would be listed for sale. But having a couple of strong suggestions towards the hi-res display from completely different sources is raising my optimism it.

In regards to those who are glad they waited. Cheers. Everyone has different needs/wants and when budget is tight a questionable product like the iPad is a good place to save it. If money wasn't a major issue though and you dig new tech, I've got to say, you missed out on a great year with a breakthrough device.

I don't think I've ever had so much fun with a device, nor has any device captured my imagination so strongly. A lot of it is just unused potential, but that has been part of the fun; the plumbing of the depths.

My initial plan was to sell it when the revision came, but there's no way I'm parting with this one when we buy a second. We can't REALLY afford the new one, but it's so much fun.

This offers a teeny tiny amount of insight about Apples long term plans for HD content distribution.

The term "better than Blu Ray" comes to mind.

I just wish the vibrating motor in my iPhone 4 was stronger. I can barely feel it in my pocket when people call.

If they use the same motor as the iPhone, I can't imagine how it would possibly be effective, as the iPad weighs more and would require more energy to vibrate.

I just wish the vibrating motor in my iPhone 4 was stronger. I can barely feel it in my pocket when people call. Perhaps, with its larger size, the iPad 2 will make for a better vibrating experience.

That sounded too dirty not to highlight.

I really hope that he does not read this board.

People on this board have been known to have negative reactions before a product is launched (many, MANY, thought the iPhone 4 was the ugliest piece of hardware EVER) and even after a product is demonstrated but before release (such as the iPad). It has been that way forever on this board, look back at the postings when Apple introduced the original iPod.

I adjusted my previous comment to be less dirty sounding; however, I fear it may be impossible to avoid the dirty connotation, when talking about the inadequacy of the vibration in my pocket, and why I hope the iPad doesn't use the same motor as the iPhone.

Recall what the fearless leader said during the conference call three months back: "We are in this to win"....and not just mess around.. This is all part of that equation!!

This is sounding pretty good.

In an earlier thread today, I posted that I was skeptical about the possibility of a 2048x1536 display because we hadn't heard (a) if any company was even making them, (b) how much more they would cost than the XGA display, and (c) whether Apple could even come up with enough GPU power to run it.

It seems these questions are steadily being answered.

Looking forward to the official announcement!

Apple Annual Report said:
The Company expects its gross margin percentage to decrease in future periods compared to levels achieved during 2010 and anticipates gross margin levels of about 36% in the first quarter of 2011. This expected decline is largely due to a higher mix of new and innovative products that have higher cost structures and deliver greater value to customers, and expected and potential future component cost and other cost increases.

Boy, I'm glad I didn't buy 1st Gen! LOL!

Quit justifying being so cheap...

Since purchasing the iPad:

Played dozens of great games
Watched a dozen or so movies
Between the wife and I, read news, articles, sites, books almost daily
Developed, tested and deployed iOS Apps with it
My 5 year old's math and spelling has impressively improved using it

That lame old excuse of "I'll wait until next gen" is really sad... Our family has enjoyed using the iPad everyday, and we'll be getting a next gen when they are released and have two of them at home.

So other than being cheap, what exactly was the benefit of holding out for more than a year?

Yes, I am laughing. ROFL.

I concur. Once the 2 rolls out we will be getting it as well. Only had this iPad for less than a month, got great use out of it. Ebooks, games, browsing, etc. Am very glad I got to experience this gen. Can't wait to get a second one so I won't have to share. :p
